Arantxa Rus, who began playing at 5 when her sister took her to the local tennis club in Delft, won the 2008 Australian Open junior title, defeating Jessica Moore from Australia. She completed the season as the world No.1-ranked junior player.
In 2008 she also won her maiden WTA main draw match in Guangzhou, as a qualifier. She defeated Yanina Wickmayer and reached the quarterfinal after beating Gisela Dulko 6–4, 6–4 (l. Pin).
In 2010 she claimed the second WTA quarterfinal in Estoril and cracked into the Top 100 on April 4, 2011. That year at Roland Garros she moved to the third round for the first time at Grand Slam level. She opened her campaign with a win over Marina Erakovic then she defeated the No. 2 seed Kim Clijsters after saving two match points, collecting the first of her two Top 10 wins. She lost to Maria Kirilenko.
In 2012 she even improved that performance at French Open. Rus beat Jamie Hampton (via retirement), Virginie Razzano who had a shock win over Serena Williams and the 25th seed Julia Görges to become the first Dutchwoman since Brenda Schultz-McCarthy in 1993. Consequently, she claimed her career-high ranking of No.61 on August 13, 2012.
But her worst period was on the rise. At 2013 Wimbledon first-round she suffered the 17th loss in a row. The WTA said the only other woman it knows of who lost 17 consecutive main-draw, tour-level matches was Sandy Collins of the U.S., who did it from 1984-87. She ended this streak in Bad Gastein, where she came back into the quarter-finals.
Her next WTA quarter-final, in 's-Hertogenbosch, came in 2017 in 's-Hertogenbosch (l. Vikhlyantseva). She ended the season ranked No.160 (up from No.174 in 2016). Season highlights was finishing runner-up at WTA 125K Series event in Taipei (l. Bencic). On ITF Circuit, she won 13th and 14th career titles at $25K events in Middelburg and Hua Hin.
