Tennis - There were only two main draw matches on Monday as the Grand Prix SAR La Princesse Lalla Meryem WTA event got underway in Morocco, but there has already been a major upset. Second seeded Sorana Cirstea was bounced out in the opening round by South African Chanelle Scheepers.
Cirstea was the highest seed in the event as top seed Dominika Cibulkova withdrew due to injury. Scheepers dominated the match winning 63 61 over the 26th ranked Romanian. Scheepers commented after her win, "The conditions were quite tough.
It was pretty windy and it's kind of a high altitude. I knew Sorana would be a very tough opponent. I was just trying to go out there and compete and make it as hard as possible for her. I thought I was really consistent and defended really well.
I really tried to make her hit an extra ball and when I had the chance, I tried to be aggressive, so hopefully I can continue that." In the only other main draw match, María-Teresa Torró-Flor beat Dutchwoman Arantxa Rus 61 61.
THis was Rus' 14th consecutive WTA loss dating back to last August. Main Draw Singles First Round - Chanelle Scheepers (RSA) d [2] Sorana Cirstea (ROU) | 6 - 3 | 6 - 1 |
