Martina Trevisan stunned the highest-seeded Garbine Muguruza in their second-round match at the Rabat Open on Wednesday. The Italian came from a set down to win 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 in two hours and 12 minutes. Muguruza won 62% of her second-serve points to Trevisan’s 28% in the opening set.
The Spaniard also saved three of the four break points she faced while converting three break points on her opponent’s serve. However, across the latter two sets, Trevisan upped her level while Muguruza wasn’t able to hold her own.
Both players traded breaks twice before Trevisan broke Muguruza a third time to clinch the set and level the match. In the deciding set, the world no. 85 didn’t face any break point while Muguruza failed to save both break points she faced.
In the quarter-finals, Trevisan will play seventh seed Arantxa Rus. The Dutchwoman defeated Hungarian Dalma Galfi, 6-4, 6-2 in their second-round match.
Rabat Open: Nuria Parrizas Diaz keeps the Spanish flag flying
Meanwhile, Muguruza’s fellow Spaniard, Nuria Parrizas Diaz advanced to the quarter-finals.
The third-seeded Parrizas Diaz posted a comeback win against Kristina Mladenovic, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 in two hours and 13 minutes. Parrizas Diaz dropped her serve four times while making good of eight of the 11 break-point chances that came her way on the Frenchwoman’s serve.
Looking to reach the semi-finals, Parrizas Diaz will play Lucia Bronzetti. The Italian had upset eighth seed Anna Kalinskaya previously. Fourth seed Mayar Sherif also crashed out in the pre-quarterfinals. Claire Liu ousted the Egyptian, 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-1 in two hours and 45 minutes.
The American will play Astra Sharma next. Anna Bondar filled the last quarter-final berth at the Rabat Open. The fifth seed from Hungary clinched 6-3, 6-3 win over Kristina Kucova in their second-round match in an hour and 24 minutes. Bondar will play Ajla Tomljanovic for a chance to reach the semi-finals.
