Monterrey: Elina Svitolina makes to finals; will play Marie Bouzkova for one last win

Top seed Elina Svitolina and ninth seed Marie Bouzkova will clash in the Monterrey final after coming through their respective semi-finals on Saturday. Earlier, in the first of the two semi-finals, the Czech upset second seed Johanna Konta 6-3, 6-4 in one hour and 41 minutes.

This is the 21-year-old’s first career final in a WTA event. An elated Bouzkova said after the match, “I love to play in Mexico. I always get so much love here. It's an amazing feeling and I feel like I'm playing at home.

I'm really excited to be in the final tomorrow”. In the final, Bouzkova does have one last test in the form of the world no. 7, Svitolina. Throughout this week, Svitolina has channelled her best and has put past her previous wayward performances to make it to the first final for this season.

Against Arantxa Rus in their semi-final, Svitolina lost just one game before finishing off the match in 50 minutes, 6-0, 6-1. While she did not face a single break point, Svitolina also broke her opponent five times in the course of the match.

She also won almost 88 per cent points on her first service to Rus’ 39 per cent. Post-match, analysing her performance, Svitolina observed, “It was an amazing match from me. I was very solid from the baseline and I was serving well, so hopefully, I can keep it up for the final as well”.

This will be the second meeting between Bouzkova and Svitolina. In their previous match, in the pre-quarterfinals of the 2019 Guangzhou Open, Bouzkova took the win over her more experienced rival. Photo Credit: Twitter
