Ons Jabeur has announced that she is withdrawing from a WTA 1000 tournament in Dubai due to "an unbearable pain" in her right knee.

After losing in the Australian Open second round in her first tournament of the 2024 season, Jabeur returned to action at the start of the Middle East swing in Abu Dhabi, where she defeated Emma Raducanu in her opener before Beatriz Haddad Maia handed her a 6-3 6-4 loss in the Abu Dhabi quarterfinal.

During the Haddad Maia match, Jabeur broke down in tears at one point during the match. After losing the match, Jabeur admitted it was due to the pain and discomfort she was feeling in her knee.

Still, Jabeur managed to compete in last week's WTA 1000 event in Doha. Unfortunately for Jabeur, deciding to compete in Doha didn't turn out to be a good decision as she ended up losing 3-6 2-6 to Lesia Tsurenko in her opening match. After evidently struggling in Abu Dhabi and her opening match in Doha, Jabeur did her best to compete in Dubai but realized it just wasn't worth it.

Jabeur announced her Dubai withdrawal

“Dear friends and family, I wanted to share with you all that my knee is not holding, it’s been unbearable to play with the pain and not being able to give my best on the court is frustrating," Jabeur said in a statement posted on her Instagram Story.

“After consultation of my doctors and team we have decided that I will have to withdraw from Dubai this week and go for more medical treatments. Looking forward to reconnect with all on the courts for the US swing. Thank you for your continuous support. Love you, Ons.”

Had 29-year-old Jabeur competed in Dubai this year, she would have made her sixth main draw appearance in the tournament. In 2022, Jabeur made her best Dubai result when she made the Dubai quarterfinal before losing to Simona Halep.

Now that Jabeur is out of Dubai, hopefully everything goes right and she manages to play in Indian Wells in early March.
