Camila Giorgi’s the only seed left in the Tenerife Ladies Open draw. The fourth-seeded Italian advanced to the quarter-finals with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Danka Kovinic in their second-round clash on Thursday. Giorgi needed 69 minutes to wrap up the win.
The Italian won 83% of her first-serve points to the Montenegrin’s 57%. In terms of second-serve points won, Giorgi won 62% while her opponent could only manage to win 29%. Giorgi was broken once during the match but went on break Kovinic’s serve five times.
The world no. 36 finished with 58 points to Kovinic’s 32 for the match. After her win, speaking with the media, Giorgi said, “It was a very different match compared to the first round. On the court, I felt immediately at ease and I am very satisfied with the (level of) tennis I showed”.
In the quarter-finals, Giorgi will play Arantxa Rus. Rus defeated Greet Minnen 6-1, 6-2 in an hour and 23 minutes.
Tenerife Ladies Open: Maria Camila Osorio Serrano's run continues
Meanwhile, at the top of the draw, Maria Camila Osorio Serrano backed up her win over top seed Elina Svitolina to reach the quarters.
In the second round, the Colombian ousted Mayar Sherif 6-4, 6-2 in an hour and 16 minutes. Osorio Serrano broke the Egyptian’s serve six times while saving three of the six break points, she faced. For the match, Osorio Serrano won 62 points to Sherif’s 48.
Osorio Serrano will take on Saisai Zheng for a place in the semi-finals. The Chinese upset seventh seed Clara Tauson 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-4 in their round-of-16 match. Zheng needed two hours and 48 minutes to clinch victory. Tauson won four more points than Zheng in the match – 108 to the latter’s 104 but Zheng was able to control her game better which helped her turn the match around in her favour.
Earlier, Irina-Camelia Begu defeated Donna Vekic to reach the quarter-finals of the Tenerife Ladies Open. The second-round match had to be postponed to Thursday because of poor light on Wednesday with Vekic leading by a set. Begu eventually posted a comeback win, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6(4).
