Player history

Jannik Sinner was born in San Candido on August 16, 2001. He is considered one of the best tennis players of his generation, as well as one of the strongest Italians ever. In singles he won seven titles out of nine finals played, including the ATP 500 tournament in Washington, in which he became the youngest Italian player to triumph in a category tournament.

He is the youngest Italian to have won an ATP tournament, as well as the only one to have won four in the same season. His best ranking is 9th position, reached in November 2021. Together with Matteo Berrettini, he is the only Italian tennis player to have played at least the quarterfinals in each Grand Slam round. In 2019, his ATP colleagues awarded him the rookie of the year award.

Originally from Sesto Pusteria, Sinner comes from a German-speaking family. Parents Siglinde and Hanspeter both work at the Fondovalle refuge in Val Fiscalina. He has a foster brother named Mark.

At the age of four he began skiing, obtaining excellent results at national level in giant slalom. He began to try his hand at tennis at the age of 8, training in the province of Bolzano with the masters Heribert Mayr and Andrea Spizzica.

Due to the length of the skiing trainings, disproportionate in his opinion compared to the brevity of the alpine competitions, at the age of 13 he definitively opted for tennis and in the summer of 2014, on the suggestion of Massimo Sartori, he moved to Bordighera, where he was followed up to February 2022 by Riccardo Piatti and Andrea Volpini.

In 2020 he transferred his registered and tax residence to the Principality of Monaco. In addition to German which is his mother tongue, he speaks Italian and English. He believes that his best quality is that he knows how to keep calm.

Career

He made his Tour debut on 12 September 2015, at the age of 14, unsuccessfully contesting the Futures Croatia F16 qualifiers. On 19 March 2016, in the first round of the Futures Croatia F4 qualifiers, he won his first professional match, defeating the Croatian Leo Kovačić in straight sets, only to be eliminated in the next round.

On 31 January 2018, at 16 years and 5 months, he won his first match in the main draw of a professional tournament, in Futures Egypt F3 held in Sharm el-Sheikh, defeating the Indian Aryan Goveas, and on 12 February 2018 he entered the first time in the world rankings, at position No. 1592.

On 18 August of the same year he reached the final at Futures level on red clay for the Italy F23 tournament in Santa Cristina Val Gardena for the first time and was defeated in straight sets by the German Peter Heller. The previous day, paired with Giacomo Dambrosi, he had won his first ITF tournament in doubles, defeating the Italian Nicolò Turchetti and the French Maxime Mora in two games.

Thanks to a wild card, he made his debut on the Challenger circuit at the Como tournament, where he was defeated in the first round by Andrej Martin in straight sets. At the Ortisei tournament, in his second presence in the main draw of a Challenger, he won his first category match on 9 October 2018, defeating his compatriot Luca Giacomini in the first round in straight sets. In the round of 16 he was defeated in three games by the French Constant Lestienne. He closes the 2018 season at number 551 in the world rankings.

In 2019, in his first round-robin match of the Next Generation ATP Finals, Sinner beat Frances Tiafoe in four sets, becoming the first Italian tennis player to win a match in this event. In the following match he prevailed over Mikael Ymer in three sets and qualified for the semifinals, despite the defeat suffered in four sets by Ugo Humbert in the last match of the group. Overcoming Miomir Kecmanović in four sets, he reached the final, where he beat Alex De Minaur in three sets.

Thanks to the 80 points conquered, he climbed 473 positions compared to the conclusion of the previous season and closed the year in 78th place in the ATP rankings, becoming the youngest player to enter the top 80 since 2003. On 19 December he was chosen for the Newcomer award of the Year, revelation tennis player of the year.

On 27 September 2020, Sinner participates at the Roland Garros for the first time, accessing directly to the main draw. He beat No. 11 seed David Goffin, Benjamin Bonzi and Federico Coria without losing a set to become the first player of 2001 to reach the round of 16 of a Grand Slam match, as well as the sixth youngest in the world and first among Italians to go so far in the Internationals of France.

In the round of 16 he beat Alexander Zverev, number 6 in the tournament and number 7 in the world, in four sets, becoming the youngest Italian ever to reach the quarterfinals in a Grand Slam match. To eliminate him is Rafael Nadal, future winner of the tournament, who beats him in three sets (7-64- 6-4, 6-1). At the end of the tournament, Sinner reached position number 46 in the ATP rankings. In the 250 in Sofia he becomes the youngest (19 years, two months and 29 days) of the 26 Italian tennis players to have won an ATP title in the Open era.

In the first round he eliminated Márton Fucsovics with a score of 6-2, 6-4. In the round of 16 he beats lucky loser Marc-Andrea Hüsler 6-3, 6-4. In the quarterfinals, he made a comeback on Alex De Minaur with a score of 6-7, 6-4, 6-1. In his third career semifinal, he eliminated Adrian Mannarino in straight sets 6-3, 7-5. In the final act, on November 14, he triumphed in the tie-break of the third set over Vasek Pospisil, lifting his first trophy in the major circuit. On 16 November he made his entry into the top 40 of the world rankings, reaching 37th position, the same with which he closed the season.

In 2021, Sinner won 4 ATP titles, reached the final of the Miami Open and entered the top-10 of the ATP ranking for the first time. In February he triumphed at the Great Ocean Road Open, Melbourne, against his countryman Stefano Travaglia. In August, he won in Washington beating Mackenzie McDonald in three sets. In October he wins again in Sofia, in two sets against Gael Monfils. Finally, a few weeks later, victory in Antwerp against Diego Schwartzman.

In 2022, Jannik reaches the quarterfinals at the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open. He also conquered his sixth ATP title, winning in Umag in July against Carlos Alcaraz. He also starts 2023 well, with the seventh title, in Montpellier, while a week later he loses in the final in Rotterdam against Daniil Medvedev.

Style of play

Sinner prefers fast surfaces, but is also very effective on red clay due to his ability to impart power and speed even in slower playing conditions. Among his greatest qualities stand out the mental strength and the ability to express the best in the crucial moments of a match.

Right, he has his best shot in the two-handed backhand, which he performs by bringing the racket immediately backwards in the preparation phase and not up, favoring the anticipation on the ball. With his backhand he doesn't generate particularly arcing trajectories, but he has an excellent natural ability to use his left hand and wrist to control lower balls, sometimes even on opponents' sliced backhands.

A little more extensive is the preparation of the obverse, which sometimes causes him some delay in responding in advance. However, the speed of the arm allows him to impact the ball in the ascending phase, producing very flat, explosive and often flattened trajectories towards the ground. The forehand is a less natural shot than the backhand, but he has taken it to an excellent level by managing to generate winners from all sides of the court.

His stature helps him push his serve, a technically not flawless shot, but with which he very often reaches 200 km/h with the first ball, with a second difficult to attack, even by the best hitters.

In 2022 he separated from Riccardo Piatti, Sinner's historic coach since the age of 14, to start a collaboration with Simone Vagnozzi with the aim of making his game more complete and varied, above all thanks to the addition of some solutions such as the serve and volley, the backhand in slice, the drop shot and the increase of descents to the net. In July 2022 Darren Cahill, former coach of Lleyton Hewitt, joined the team, who immediately showed the results of his work by helping Sinner reach the quarterfinals at Wimbledon.

While the story with the influencer Maria Braccini seems to have completely ended, never associated with or seen together with the blue for several months now, the talented 21-year-old tennis player would have gotten very close to a new girl, whose identity has still remained in the shadow.
