Player history

Matteo Berrettini was born in Rome on 12 April 1996. His father, Luca, is a former company manager, who was the first to encourage his son to pursue a sports career, while his mother, Claudia Bigo, works in a tobacconist's shop. He has a brother, Jacopo, also a tennis player, who convinced him to enter the world of tennis despite Matteo's strong passion for basketball and judo.

The first to teach him tennis was, from 2003 to 2010, Raoul Pietrangeli, teacher and technical director of the Circolo Magistrati of the Court of Auditors in Rome. At the beginning of 2011, Berrettini moved to the Circolo Canottieri Aniene, under the guidance of the current coach Vincenzo Santopadre. He has Brazilian ancestry on his maternal side; his grandmother, Lucia, born in Rio de Janeiro, moved to Italy in the sixties.

Career

He played his first professional match in August 2013 at Futures Italy F21, where he was defeated in the opening round. He ends the season at No. 435 in the ATP ranking.

In February he won his second Futures title in singles at Switzerland F1 by beating Frenchman Laurent Lokoli in the final. Thanks to this victory he enters the top 300 for the first time, in 264th position. In May, thanks to a wild card, he made his debut in the ATP Tour, at the Internazionali d'Italia and lost in the first round against Fabio Fognini. In July he won his first Challenger title in San Benedetto, beating world No. 106 Laslo Djere in straight sets in the final. In October he rises to 120th place in the ranking. In 2018, in the first round of the Indian Wells Masters 1000 qualifiers, he overtook the American Denis Kudla, losing in the decisive round against Peter Polansky. However, due to the withdrawal of Nick Kyrgios, he was revived as a lucky loser, accessing the second round by right, where he was defeated by Daniil Medvedev.

He later reached the final at the Irving Challenger, entering, for the first time, the top 100 of the world ranking, reaching 95th position.
