Matteo Berrettini announced that he sustained a ruptured ligament but also revealed that his ankle injury "did not cause as much damage as originally feared." Berrettini, a former world No 6, suffered a scary-looking ankle injury during his US Open second-round match against Arthur Rinderknech.

Berrettini was heard screaming "oh no" before ball kids rushed to cover him with umbrellas in a scary moment. That was it for Berrettini, who retired the match and put his head into his hands as he was in disbelief over what happened.

Now, Berrettini is set to miss next week's Davis Cup action and also the entire Asian swing. But Berrettini remains hopeful that he will be able to play again after mid-October. "Mixed feelings. Positive news following some further tests that my ankle injury did not cause as much damage as originally feared - I have a ruptured ligament.

But I’m extremely disappointed that I will not be able to represent Italy in Bologna, or compete in the ATP events in Asia. Now I start my intense rehab to hopefully return to tour shortly after the Shanghai Masters. Thank you again for all the kind messages," Berrettini said in a message posted on his Instagram.

Berrettini's bad luck with injuries continues

After a career-best year in 2021, Berrettini has battled various injuries and setbacks.

Because of that, Berrettini hasn't had much success over the last two years. This season, Berrettini is just 12-11. Also, Berrettini has plummeted to No 36 in the world. Last year, Berrettini made the US Open quarterfinal. Since Berrettini exited this year's US Open in the second round, he is set to further drop in the rankings.

When the ATP rankings get updated after the US Open on Monday, Berrettini will be ranked around No 65 in the world. It remains to be seen when will Berrettini be able to play again.
