Matteo Berrettini's injury suffered at the US Open could be more serious than expected. So problematic that it would prevent the strong Italian tennis player from also participating in the Paris Rolex Masters. It is not yet clear how the Italian tennis player intends to end his unfortunate 2023 season.
Currently the player is only registered in Vienna, while he is absent from the entry list for Paris Bercy, the last Master 1000 on indoor hard court which precedes the Nitto events ATP Finals and the final stages of the Davis Cup.
The 27-year-old has returned to training with the aim of taking part in the team competition in November, although he has not yet managed to regain his best physical condition.
What will the Italian decide to do together with the technical staff? Will he also give up the Austrian ATP 500, returning only in 2024 or will he play at least one tournament in these last stages of the year? However, it is not excluded that Berrettini will participate in the French event.
The organizers could in fact decide to give him a wild card and thus avoid the qualifications if he had registered regularly, given that at the moment he is only number 63 in the world ranking.
The entry list of the Paris Bercy Master 1000 included the defending champion Holger Rune and the Serbian world no.1 Novak Djokovic.
Matteo Berrettini: "I'm sorry I can't be on the court in Stockholm"
Berrettini, on the official website of the Stockholm tournament, explained: "I am very sorry that I cannot be on the court in Stockholm as I had planned. They told me the tournament and the city are fantastic. I am very sorry that I was unable to fully recover from my injury."
Thomas Enqvist, director of the BNP Paribas Nordic Open, also expressed his regret for Berrettini's absence: "It's a big disappointment for us and of course for Matteo who worked hard to get back into shape and return to the field in Stockholm, where he would have played for the first time."
Berrettini's goal is to arrive in the best possible condition for the Davis Cup Finals or for the start of 2024.
