Matteo Berrettini's season ends here: his nightmare 2023 is officially over and the former number 6 in the world, who slipped back in the rankings after constant physical problems, will return directly in 2024. It was in the air after the last choices but now it is official.
His last tournament was the 2023 US Open, a tournament where he suffered yet another injury, a physical setback due to a fall in the second round match against the Frenchman Rinderknech. Initially the injury seemed more serious but fortunately it didn't turn out that way.
Matteo tried until the end but little by little he was eliminated from the tournaments and in the end even the residual hopes of participating in the Davis Cup Finals in Malaga remained in vain. A terrible 2023 for Matteo where the only good news comes from private life.
The Italian lives his relationship with his partner Melissa Satta intensely and in the best possible way. However, this news has shocked all his fans, and has unleashed the ire of his haters, who are stupidly filling social media with posts against the Italian.
Matteo Berrettini shares his message
For Berrettini we will now start again directly in 2024. Through a post on social media, Matteo explained what his conditions are and released the following message: "Despite the fact that I have trained at a good level in recent weeks, my medical staff has advised me to avoiding competing in the last weeks of 2023 would have been too high a risk.
It was a very difficult decision to accept, but I have to do what is best for next season and for my long-term career. I will take this opportunity to reset, start again and rebuild for next year where I want to start again in full shape and health.
It has been an extremely difficult year but I am looking forward to a successful season in 2024. I will remain in close contact with the Davis Cup captain and will make myself available to support the Italian team in any way possible for the next stages finals to be held in Malaga. Your support has helped me and continues to help me in the most difficult moments. Thank you all so much."
