Matteo Berrettini's nightmare seems to have no end. The Italian tennis player, already forced to miss the last part of the season due to the ankle injury suffered at the US Open, has worked hard to recover physically and relaunch himself at the beginning of 2024.
But a new foot injury risks jeopardize the start of his season. Berrettini, as reported by Sky Sport, did not respect the established program and did not train with his friend and compatriot Lorenzo Sonego in Turin, due to a new foot problem.
An injury that could put his participation in the Brisbane qualifying tournament, scheduled to start on 29 December, in serious doubt. Berrettini lost many points due to the long period of inactivity and slipped to 92nd position of the ATP world ranking.
A ranking that will not allow him to directly access the main draws of a large number of tournaments.
Berrettini wil try to recover consistency with rafael Nadal's former coach
Berrettini has decided to rely on Rafael Nadal's former historic coach Francisco Roig, to return to achieving important results.
The former tennis player and now coach was a fundamental figure in Nadal's career. Roig has collaborated with both Toni Nadal and Carlos Moya. The separation with Vincenzo Santopadre, capable of taking Matteo Berrettini to the Wimbledon final in 2021, was consensual.
Santopadre himself, again on Sky Sport, explained: "I answer with the utmost sincerity: Matteo and I made this decision together. Our separation was inevitable. For Matteo's sake it was appropriate for him to make this change and we decided to follow this path.
The relationship remained healthy, the separation occurred in the correct manner and at the right time." Now the new injury and the new tribulations for a season that hasn't started yet, but which got off to a bad start straight away.
The Italian tennis player also received a lot of criticism this season due to his relationship with Italian showgirl Melissa Satta. Haters and social media users have harshly and unfairly attacked both the tennis player and the girl, attributing the problems the former Wimbledon runner-up is facing to their relationship.
