Borna Coric was born in Zagreb, Croatia, on November 14, 1996. He has played in eight finals on the ATP Tour, winning three of them, among which the Masters 1000 in Cincinnati in 2022 stands out, a tournament he conquered as nº 152 in the ATP ranking, the lowest ranking with which a title in this category has ever been won.
His best result in Grand Slam trials was the quarterfinals at the 2020 US Open, while his best ATP ranking was the 12th position he reached in November 2018. He was part of the Croatian Davis Cup team that won the trophy in the 2018 edition. Among the juniors he won the 2013 US Open and reached first place in the world rankings.
At junior level he achieved excellent results and already made his mark at the 2012 Trofeo Bonfiglio, when he reached the semi-finals at the age of fifteen before surrendering to Gianluigi Quinzi. In the following October he won his first Grade A title by imposing himself in doubles in the Osaka Mayor's Cup. The leap in quality came the following year, at the first Slam of the season in Australia he reached the semifinals and was defeated by Thanasi Kokkinakis, then repeating the result at Roland Garros, where he yields to Christian Garín.
In September he won the junior Grand Slam title at the US Open, taking revenge on Kokkinakis, beaten in three sets in the final, and thanks to this result he reached the top of the world rankings in his category. The New York tournament was the last played among the juniors, and he closed the experience after winning 5 singles and 2 doubles titles.
He made his first professional appearances on the ITF Futures circuit and won his first fights in February 2012. In April 2013 he lifted his first professional trophy by winning the singles title at the Futures Great Britain F9 tournament, and throughout the season prevails in four other Futures Finals. In July he made his debut on the major circuit with a three set defeat against Horacio Zeballos in the ATP tournament in Umag, a match in which he still showed excellent qualities.
On 4 April 2014 he won his first Davis Cup match by beating world number 21 Jerzy Janowicz in the fifth set in the match he won 3-1 against Poland; thus achieves his first success on a top 100 in the ranking and contributes to Croatia's passage to the round. Soon after he plays his last ITF tournament. On 24 October 2014, in the quarterfinals of the ATP 500 tournament in Basel, he achieved his first victory against one of the top ten players in the world, defeating the No. 3 in the ranking Rafael Nadal 6-2, 7-6.
In 2015 Coric confirms himself as one of the most significant tennis players on the Tour: it is the year in which he takes part in all the Grand Slams for the first time and enters the top 50 in the world rankings. 2016 opens with his first career final on the ATP Tour in Chennai, defeating among others Roberto Bautista Agut and in the match that awards the title he yields to world No. 4 Stan Wawrinka 6-3, 7-5. On 16 April 2017 he won his first ATP title at the ATP 250 in Marrakech by beating Philipp Kohlschreiber in the final with a score of 5-7, 7-6, 7-5.
On 24 June 2018 he won his second career title on the grass in Halle, the first in the 500 category; in the first round he eliminated world No. 3 Alexander Zverev in straight sets and won the final against world No. 1 Roger Federer. In October, he reached his first career Masters 1000 final in Shanghai, after beating Roger Federer again in the semifinals in just over an hour and in straight sets; in the last act he was defeated by world No. 3 Novak Dokovic with a score of 6-3, 6-4.
He starts the new 2019 season by winning his first career matches at the Australian Open; he eliminated Steve Darcis and Márton Fucsovics in three sets, and after the success in 4 sets over Filip Krajinović he was defeated in the fourth set by Lucas Pouille after winning the first set.
In 2020, after the long stop due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he returned to the courtat the Cincinnati tournament, exceptionally played in New York, in the first round he took advantage of the withdrawal of Benoît Paire and then yielded to world No. 10 David Goffin. At the US Open he eliminates Pablo Andújar first, then takes five sets to get the better of Londero and the world No. 6 Stefanos Tsitsipas, defeated in the decisive tie-break, while in the round of 16 he gets the better of Jordan Thompson in three sets.
He thus reached the quarterfinals in a Grand Slam for the first time in his career and was defeated in 4 sets by Alexander Zverev after winning the first. He opens the 2021 season at the ATP 250 tournament in Melbourne and is defeated in the quarterfinals by future champion Daniel Evans. At the Australian Open he doesn't go beyond the second round, surprisingly eliminated by No. 192 ATP Mackenzie McDonald.
In March, he reached the semifinal at the ATP 500 in Rotterdam without losing any sets, where he beat Dusan Lajovic and Kei Nishikori and was beaten by Marton Fucsovics. A shoulder injury soon after forced him to end the season early and to undergo surgery in May. He then faces a long rehabilitation process and progressively descends in the ranking.
He returns to show off his best tennis by winning the Cincinnati Masters in 2022, a tournament that he plays as No. 152 in the world rankings, taking advantage of the protected ranking; after the success on the ATP nº 33 Lorenzo Musetti, in the second round he defeated the world nº 3 Rafael Nadal for the third time out of five meetings, imposing himself with a score of 7-6, 4-6, 6-3. It will be the only set lost in the whole tournament, in the next round he concedes 5 games to the ATP nº 19 Roberto Bautista Agut, in the quarterfinals he eliminates the world nº 9 Félix Auger-Aliassime and in the semifinal the nº 11 Cameron Norrie, victories with which he accesses the first ATP final after almost two years and the second ever in a Masters 1000.
He won the first tournament in this category and the third in his career on the ATP circuit by beating world No. 7 Stefanos Tsitsipas by 7-6, 6-2 and becomes the lowest-ranked player to have won a Masters 1000 tournament, a record that belonged to Roberto Carretero with his success at the 1996 ATP German Open as No. 143 in the ranking.
His style of play lends itself to having long rallies and wearing down his opponent from the baseline. Since he was born left-handed but plays right-handed, the strengths of his game are his swing and two-handed backhand. His forehand, with its long recovery and tendency to collapse under the stress of an opponent's attack, has been cited as an area of possible concentration in the future.
Coric is very solid and consistent mainly from the backhand wing, but has shown some improvement over the forehand , and this improvement was praised in his defeats of Roger Federer in both the 2018 Halle final and the semi-final of the Shanghai Masters. However, he still struggles to hit forehand groundstrokes in defensive positions or on the run. He has great coordination and footwork, thus allowing him to move well laterally on the field.
He also possesses a strong and accurate serve, which allows him to easily earn many points during his service games. This, in turn, helps to preserve his energy for return plays and outlast opponents in long rallies in order to break their serve. He punishes players who drop the drop ball, catching the ball on the rise and effectively turning defense into offense.
