The 30th edition of the Mexican Tennis Open will have two Grand Slam winners. Although the list of the main draw was announced with only the presence of the Spanish Carlos Alcaraz, the Austrian Dominic Thiem will be added to that list.
The winner of the US Open 2020 will receive one of the tournament's wildcards, just now that he is far from his best level and very low in the ranking position. Mextenis announced the cut from his list in position 54 of the ATP ranking, well above the aspirations that the Austrian could have at the moment.
It should be noted that Thiem currently occupies the 99th site, still within the top-100. Right now he must hold on to the invitations he manages to receive from the different events on the tour. One of them will come from Acapulco, an event that he already won in the pass and where at some point he became one of the most common guests.
"Hello Mexico, I'm Dominic Thiem, your champion of the 2016 edition and I want to congratulate you on 30 years of the Mexican Open, it's a great number, celebrate a lot and I can't wait to return," said the Austrian in a video broadcast on social networks of the event.
Thiem was crowned in the 2016 edition, when he was barely 23 years old and defeated the Japanese Kei Nishikori in the final. The Mexican public has a special connection with Nicolás Massu's pupil, although he decided to be absent from the event during the last editions where he was available before getting injured.
He will now return in issue 30 on AMT. Do you think Dominic Thiem will be able to return to the version that led him to win a Grand Slam title?
Thiem was not one to be distressed
Dominic Thiem reflected on his Davis Cup loss against Croatian Borna Coric on Sunday.
"I’m disappointed I could not help Austria win the Davis Cup tie against Croatia. Congratulations, and well done to them," Dominic Thiem wrote. "I know it wasn't easy for all of you to support me lately, and I fully understand that some of my performances weren't what they should be.
I will get back to the best version of myself, and with your support, it will go faster and feel much better," Dominic Thiem wrote. "I appreciate it and I am beyond grateful you guys have my back."
