Rune, seeded at No. 1, was playing against fourth-seeded Borna Coric in the Montpellier semifinal when he started experiencing issues in his right forearm. After evidently struggling for some time on the court - especially with serving the ball - Rune decided to retire the match with Coric leading 6-3 4-1.
As the announcer was announcing Rune's retirement, the crowd started booing the 20-year-old Dane. The boos also continued when Rune made it to his chair to pack up his bag and prepare to leave the court.

Rune retired injured against Coric
Before Rune started experiencing big pain in his forearm, the Dane started the match by claiming the first break in the third game of the match. However, Rune's lead was pretty short-lived as Coric managed to get the break back instantly in the fourth game.
After getting the break back, Coric also had a great chance to go up by a break in the sixth game but Rune managed to save three consecutive break points and tie the first set to six games apiece. However, Coric kept pressing Rune on his serve, earning new break points in the eighth game and realizing them for a 5-3 lead, before serving out for the opener in the following game.
Up by a set, Coric also started the second set by breaking Rune in the first game of the second set and also serving out the following game to open an early 2-0 lead. After losing five consecutive games, Rune managed to serve out the third game and end Rune's run of five consecutive games.
But Rune's issues with forearm continued and the Dane decided that would be it for the day after getting broken again by Coric in the fifth game of the second set and falling down by a set and a double break.
