Player history

Holger Rune was born in Gentofte, Denmark on April 29, 2003. During his career he won three singles titles, including the prestigious Paris Masters 2022. In Grand Slam events he played in the quarterfinals at the Open of France 2022 and the fourth round at the Australian Open 2023, while his best ranking is the 9th position, reached on January 30, 2023.

With his success at the Paris Masters, he became the first player to defeat five players ranked in the world's top ten in the same tournament. Born in Charlottenlund, Denmark, he is the second son of Anders and Aneke. He started playing tennis at the age of six, giving up playing soccer, imitating his sister Alma. Since his early years, his coach has been Lars Christensen.

Rune started playing tennis at the age of 6 because her sister played and started taking the sport seriously. During his childhood, he was coached by Lars Christensen who still remains the head coach to him and along with his mother is considered to be his biggest inspiration. His idols growing up were Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.

Holger also has clear goals for the future, as he confirmed in a recent interview: "The gold medal at the Paris Olympics 2024 is one of my biggest goal. I'm super excited about it. It will be next year, 2024 in Paris. Game always great in Paris and I love it. It's a big event. As a child, I dreamed about it too, so it will soon come true. I think hard and clay are my best surfaces. I have yet to get experience on grass but I feel that my game, the aggressive style of play that I have is good for grass and I move well. I just need to practice more and get used to it. And I think I can be as good as I am on hard and clay."

Rune has a very strong temper. He, for an interview for Express, spoke about the Big 3: "The fight at the GOAT? I don't think anything about this subject, honestly. They talk about who has won the most titles, who has won the most Grand Slam titles or who has remained the number one for longer.

In the end I have to say that all these athletes are amazing. They have achieved historic milestones for this sport. Furthermore, they are transporting many young people towards this sport, they are athletes who have been the guide. Records then need to be broken and we all work to improve so that we can beat these.

I believe that they have done something positive for the future of tennis, something that will contribute to raising the level of this sport in the future". I think athletes like Roger, Rafa, Novak and Andy Murray have shown a very high level and represent the which is why NextGen is constantly growing. Even in 2023 athletes like Rafa Nadal and Novak Djokovic can fight with us for the victory of Grand Slam titles, I think they help us raise the bar."

Style of play

Holger started playing tennis at the age of 6, following in the footsteps of his older sister Alma. He hasn't stopped since then and he's not one of those who gets bored on the court He has a truly rare aptitude for work and sacrifice.

At the press conference during the Roland Garros 2022, Holger Rune admitted that he has always been a fan of Roger Federer. Rune explained: "Roger Federer has always been my idol, I grew up watching his matches. Roger has a very unique style of play, as well as being an absolute phenomenon even near the net. Today everyone is hitting hard from the baseline, while the transition to the network is often a problem. Federer is a source of inspiration, which goes far beyond just hitting. I don't try to imitate him, but I don't mind using the whole field to not give reference points to my opponents."

Nick Kyrgios in an interview with BT said that Rune would be an ideal doubles partner, considering the praise that the Wimbledon finalist addressed to the winner of the Paris-Bercy 1000 tournament in the same interview: "Holger's potential is incredible, such potential that he could win several Grand Slam tournaments during his career. He could be important to the sport of tennis. When Holger wants, I'm ready. Maybe even later this year in a minor tournament. I'm sure we'd like to play together. We could make a good doubles pair. So let's see. Maybe I'll ask him."

Lars Christensen, who follows Holger Rune, spoke on a recent episode of the ATP Tennis Radio Podcast where he talked about some interesting details about the Dane's tennis. Christensen revealed how the reigning Paris Bercy champion has always followed the deeds of the three big three Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic from an early age.

He told: "Holger is very passionate about tennis. He used to sit with his ipad and watch tennis footage. He really liked big players. As a young man he was very fond of Federer, Rafa, Djokovic and many other players. When I first started working with Holger, I always took the best of the best, watching Djokovic's footwork and his ability to stay close to the baseline, the way he returns, watching Roger's offensive play, how he get close to the net, as needed.

I watched Rafa a lot, how he performed on clay courts, his willingness to put in that extra shot and make corners and lots of spins and stuff like that. I tried to take the best of all and tried to build Holger on that input."

Private life

In June 2021, the ATP opened a homophobic investigation against Holger. In confronting the Argentinian, Thomas Etcheverry, Holger allegedly used homophobic expressions such as: "come on, fa*got," addressed to his opponent, and then repeated with: "you are a shit*y player and you play like a fa*got."

Very reserved and not active on social media, nothing is known about Holger's private life. Difficult to speculate if he is single or engaged.

At the end of the investigation, the union fined him $1,500 for breaking the code of conduct, explaining that there is no place for certain attitudes on the courts of the Tour. The ATP factored in the player's immediate apology and his still-clean tennis record, and Rune fared pretty well.

Rune explained: "I hope anyone who has felt offended by my behavior will accept my apology. I'm young and have a lot to learn, but that doesn't entitle me to say such nonsense. I've learned my lesson, and I think it's only right that people criticize me."

Holger reserved a place among tennis' elite following a 2022 last part of the season, in which he won titles first in Stockholm and then Paris-Bercy, as well as reaching the finals in Sofia and Basel. The Dane, first reserve at the ATP Finals in Turin, released an absolutely content-rich interview with Marca.

In reality, Rune had already smelled the air of the Finals, participating in the Masters as a sparring partner in 2019. He said: "It was an incredible experience rallying with Federer, with Djokovic. I started playing professionally a few months later My goal for next year is to be number one. I didn't expect to be a reserve for the Masters as tenth in the standings. What I wanted was to improve every detail. My goal for next year is to be number one. I beat almost every player in the 'top 10', including number one.

I know what I'm missing and that's what I will work hard on in the preseason. I want to be ready for Australia. I have a great team with me, which has been the same for a long time with the only addition being Patrick Mouratoglou. Everything changed when I beat Zverev in the second round in Munich. I realized that I could beat the top players At Roland Garros I beat Tsitsipas and that made me believe more and more in my chances.

If I hadn't beaten them it would have been difficult to convince me that I would have done it. Now, the challenge to world number 1 Carlos Alcaraz is officially launched. The fact that Carlos Alcaraz is first in the standings with his own age motivates you more? My goal is not to be better than Carlos but to be the best I can.

I have to focus on myself. What Alcaraz has achieved is incredible and he deserves to be where he is. I have to go my own way. Carlos is a friend and a rival at the same time. I saw him yesterday and congratulated him for making it to number one.

We have known each other since we were 11 and have a good bond. We played a lot against in the youth. He beat me and so did I, but always in very even games. Has the video of a double at Tarbes 2017 gone viral? We got along well.

I don't remember who took the initiative. We made the semifinals and came close to the final. Carlos didn't speak much English so it was difficult to communicate. We both showed a lot of energy on the pitch and I would love to play with him again."
