Donna Vekic was born in Osijek on June 28, 1996.
In her career she won four WTA tournaments out of eleven finals played and reached number 19 in singles on November 4, 2019. Her best result in Grand Slam tournaments is the quarterfinals at the US Open 2019 and at the Australian Open 2023, while reaching at least the round of 16 at every Major.
Born to two professional athletes, Vekic reached the first WTA career final at 2012 Tashkent (l. to Begu). In what was her first WTA main draw appearance, she became the youngest WTA finalist since 15‐year‐old Tamira Paszek won Portoroz in 2005.
In 2013, her first Top 100 season, she was runner-up in Birmingham (l. to Hantuchova in final). In 2014, she won her maiden WTA title in Kuala Lumpur. On her way to the final, she won three of her four matches after losing the first set and overcame No. 10, Dominika Cibulková in a third set tie-breaker in the final to complete her first Top 10 win.

She began the season with a quarterfinal appearance in Hobart (l. Watson) and ended it reaching the same stage in Luxembourg (l. Goerges). She reached the second round at Australian Open (l. Bonaventure) and the third round in Miami (l. Collins).
On clay, the best result was the quarterfinal run in Istanbul, losing to Begu after serving for the match twice and holding a match point. She fell in the second round in Lugano (l. Barthel), Rome (l. Keys), Madrid (l. Muguruza) and the Roland Garros (l. Sharapova), rising to the then-career-high ranking of No.42 on June 11.
On grass, she failed to defend the title in Nottingham, where she lost to Konta in the semifinals. She achieved a career-best result at a Slam by reaching the round-16 at Wimbledon (l. Goerges). En route, she recorded her best win-by-rank to date ousting No.4 Stephens in the first-round. She equaled this result by defeating No.4 Garcia in Tokyo in the quarterfinals.
In Washington, she reached the first WTA final since 2017 Nottingham, and her sixth overall, losing to Kuznetsova after holding four match points. She completed the hardcourt season in North America falling at the first round at US Open (l. Sevastova).
In the Asian Swing, she reached the semifinal in Tokyo (l. eventual champion Karolina Pliskova). During that run, she scored victories over multiple Top 10 players at the same tournament for first time in her career by defeating No.9 Stephens and No.4 Garcia. She finished the season with a 34-25 overall win-loss record.
She arrives at the last Grand Slam of the year, the US Open 2019, as the 23rd seed. Here, she beats Richèl Hogenkamp 7-6 6-3, Kaia Kanepi 7-5 6-3 and Julija Putinceva for 6-4 6-1. The fourth round sees her opposite Julia Görges, whom she defeats 65-7, 7-5, 6-3 after saving a match point in the second set and thus reaching the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career. In this case, however, she surrenders to Belinda Bencic with a score of 65-7, 3-6.
2020 is not a good year for her, who comes out of the top 30, also thanks to a serious physical problem.
In 2021 she reached the round of 16 in Melbourne and won her third WTA title, Courmayeur, against Clara Tauson. At the end of January 2022 she leaves the top 100 of the ranking. At the French Open she passes the qualifiers, beating Robin Anderson, Louisa Chirico and Anastasija Gasanova. In the first round she met another qualifier, Mirjam Björklund, winning 7-66 6-2 while in the second round she was ousted by Anisimova.
After a lackluster season, she regains confidence at the WTA 500 in San Diego, where, in the qualifiers, she eliminates Elizabeth Mandlik and Lauren Davis. With impeccable performances she then prevails over the number 5 of the seed Maria Sakkari (7-63 6-1), the former number one in the world Karolina Pliskova (6-3 6-2), the number 3 of the seed Aryna Sabalenka (6 -4 65-7 6-1) and Australian Open finalist Danielle Collins (6-4 4-6 7-62), reaching the first final in a tournament of this category since 2019, when she reached the last act of the St Petersburg Ladies Trophy. In the final, she faces world number one Iga Swiatek losing 3-6 6-3 0-6. Thanks to the excellent week Vekić is back in the top 50, at position 49.
Vekic begins 2023 at the Australian Open, where she reaches her first quarterfinals in the Australian Slam, thanks to victories over: Oksana Selechmet'eva (6-2 2-6 7-6), Ljudmila Samsonova (6-3 6-0 ), Nuria Parrizas-Diaz (6-2 6-2) and Linda Fruhvirtová (6-2 1-6 6-3). She faces Aryna Sabalenka for a place in the semifinals. The Belarusian stops the Croatian's run, ousting her from the tournament with a score of 3-6 2-6.
In February, in Monterrey, Vekic takes the eleventh WTA final of her career as third seed, eliminating Curenko, Navarro, Bonaventure and Zhu. In the final act, she beat world No. 5 Caroline Garcia 6-4 3-6 7-5, winning her fourth title on the major circuit, her first since 2021.
In addition to tennis, Vekic founded a luxury home fragrance brand, DNNA, in 2021, selling beeswax candles and reed diffusers. He announced that a portion of all revenues from sales will be donated to bee conservation in his native Croatia.
