WTA Rome: Iga Swiatek sweeps away Donna Vekic, the Highlights
by LORENZO CIOTTI
No problem for WTA number one Iga Swiatek, who settled Donna Vekic in straight sets for 6-3 6-4, in 1h and 36 minutes of play, at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia. The Pole risked putting the Croatian back in the game only when she served for the match, but she canceled two break points with determination, getting the quarterfinals of the WTA 1000 on the Rome clay-courts.
Swiatek will now find on the other side of the net Elena Rybakina, an opponent who has already defeated her twice this year: at the Australian Open and at Indian Wells. Below the highlights:
The men's results
Novak Djokovic gets the pass for the Quarterfinals at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome.
After the initial fear for some physical problem Nole concludes the practice without particular problems and closes in two sets against the British Cameron Norrie, number 13 in the world. It finishes 6-3 6-4 in just under an hour and thirty minutes of play.
The Serbian continues the run-up to repeat last year's success and keep alive the run-up to number one, lost this week to the detriment of Alcaraz. For the Serbian it is the seventeenth time in the Quarterfinals in as many participations, scary numbers in the Capital.
From the very first moments before the match there is apprehension for the Serbian, taken care of in the pre match with the match starting a few minutes late. He now heads to the Quarterfinals in Rome where he will face Holger Rune, winner in the match against Popyrin.
Bad and unexpected misstep by Jannik Sinner in the round of 16 of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia. The roadmap of the blue tennis player in the Masters 1000 tournaments in 2023, before today's defeat, had been big: two semifinals and one final; 14 wins and 3 losses.
Sinner appeared rather exhausted from a physical point of view, he lost control of his forehand too many times, and Francisco Cerundolo ended up taking advantage of it. The Argentine prevailed in a comeback with the score of (3) 6-7, 6-2, 6-2.
There will be no derby between Lorenzo Musetti and Lorenzo Sonego in the round of 16 of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia. Musetti managed to manage with courage and authority the break advantage won in the third set yesterday afternoon against Frances Tiafoe.
When the match resumed, Musetti was never in trouble during his servings and even found the double break in the ninth game, the one that closed the games definitively. Sonego, on the other hand, was defeated by Stefanos Tsitsipas in the second half of the match which was interrupted the day before due to rain: the Greco then also eliminated Musetti.
Daniil Medvedev defeated Alexander Zverev, in one of the most anticipated matches of the day.
