World No 20 Donna Vekic has withdrawn from this week's WTA 250 event in Bad Homburg. Vekic, who was a seeded player in Bad Homburg, was scheduled to play her opener at the tournament on Monday against Emma Navarro. On Sunday, Vekic was beaten by Petra Kvitova in the Berlin final.
After playing five matches last week and concluding her Berlin run on Sunday, it was expected to see Vekic withdrawing from Bad Homburg as playing again on Monday would have probably been too much for the Croat. Had Vekic competed in Bad Homburg, she would have been making her debut at the German grass-court tournament.
Vekic gets a confidence boost ahead of Wimbledon
Vekic kicked off her grass season two weeks ago in Nottingham, where she suffered a surprise defeat to Viktorija Golubic in the round-of-16. After a disappointing loss in Nottingham, Vekic bounced back in Berlin, where she fell just short of winning the title.
En route to reaching the Berlin final, Vekic stunned 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina. With a win over Rybakina and a runner-up finish in Berlin, Vekic's confidence levels certainly improved ahead of Wimbledon. Also, Vekic returned to world No 20 in the world following her Berlin success.
“It hasn’t been an easy couple of years for me, but thanks to my team, family, friends and all the people around me. Not just the people here today. The people at home, watching, for supporting me and believing I can come back here, even when I didn’t," Vekic said after the Berlin final.
Vekic, 26, is now set to make her ninth Wimbledon main draw appearance. Vekic's best Wimbledon result came in 2018, when she made the round-of-16 before losing to Julia Georges. Last year, Vekic didn't make it far at Wimbledon as she was beaten by Jessica Pegula in the first round.
Vekic is having a good season and there is no doubt that she will be determined to make a deep Wimbledon run this year.
