Player history

Cameron Norrie was born in Johannesburg, August 23, 1995. His best ATP singles ranking was 8th in September 2022. He has won four singles tournaments on the ATP Tour, including the 2021 Indian Wells Masters 1000, and also boasts an ATP title in doubles.

His best result in Grand Slam trials is the semifinal reached at Wimbledon 2022. He was born in Johannesburg, South Africa to a Scottish father and Welsh mother, both microbiologists. In 1998 he moved with his family to New Zealand in Auckland. In 2011 he moved to live in London and three years later he enrolled at the Texas Christian University of Fort Worth.

He finished his studies in 2017, returned to live in London, near Wimbledon, and turned professional. When the Indian Wells Masters was canceled in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Norrie returned to live with her parents in New Zealand for a time.

In 2017, Cameron made great progress despite missing four months, winning two ATP matches but shining on the Challenger Tour where he grabbed 32 wins and three titles from four finals. In 2018, the Briton had another big season, winning 19 ATP matches and cracking the top-100 for the first time in May. Despite the poor start of the year, Cameron defeated John Isner in Lyon to reach the semis and he advanced into the last four in Atlanta and Los Cabos in back-to-back weeks.

Career

Norrie made his first professional experience in January 2013 at the ATP 250 tournament qualifiers in Auckland and was eliminated in the first match played. He won the first two fights in the following April at the ITF Great Britain F9 tournament and bowed out in the quarterfinals. At the next Great Britain F11 he lifted his first professional trophy by winning the doubles tournament with Luke Bambridge.

Defeated in the qualifiers of two other ATP tournaments, in August he reached the semifinals of the ITF Canada F6. In February 2014 he passed the qualifiers for the first time in a Challenger tournament in West Lakes, in the first round of the main draw he beat the top 200 Matt Reid and was eliminated in the second round. In June he plays the final at the ITF Israel F7 tournament and is forced to retire during the second set.

His first singles title came in October 2015 at the US F29 with the victory in the final over Alexios Halebian. In the summer of 2016 he won two more ITF titles in the United States, in August he reached the first Challenger final in Aptos and was defeated by Daniel Evans, a result with which he entered the top 300 of the ATP ranking.

In 2017, he won his first ATP fight in Eastbourne by beating No. 49 ranked Horacio Zeballos, in his first win against a top 100 player, and was promptly eliminated by Gael Monfils. He was awarded a wild-card entry to the Wimbledon tournament and was defeated by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the first round. In July he won his first Challenger title in Binghamton by beating world No. 69 Jordan Thompson in the final in the third set and at the end of the tournament he entered the top 200.

He passed the US Open qualifiers, accessed the second round due to the forfeit given by his opponent Dmitry Tursunov and was eliminated by Pablo Carreño Busta. He then reaches three consecutive Challenger finals, losing the first in Cary against Kevin King and winning those of Tiburon and Stockton, surpassing respectively Tennys Sandgren and Darian King; on October 16 it is at the 110th position worldwide.

In 2018, at the Estoril Open, he beat Robin Haase, before being eliminated in the second round by Roberto Carballés Baena. In the doubles tournament he won his first ATP title together with Kyle Edmund by overcoming Wesley Koolhof / Artem Sitak in the final with a score of 6-4, 6-2.

In 2021 he won his first title in Los Cobos, Mexico, against Brandon Nakashima. Between 2020 and 2021, the tennis player was the protagonist of a sensational rise.

In October he won the most important tournament since the beginning of his career at the Indian Wells Masters, eliminating in order Tennys Sandgren, the nº 19 ATP Roberto Bautista Agut, Tommy Paul, the nº 15 Diego Schwartzman and in the semifinal Grigor Dimitrov. In the match that awarded the title he prevailed 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 over Nikoloz Basilasvili, becoming the No. 16 in the world ranking and the No. 1 of British tennis players.

2022 is a year of other great successes. The semifinal at Wimbledon, the Top-10 and two titles. In February at the Delray Beach Open, she lost only one set against Korda during the tournament and in the final she defeated Reilly Opelka after two tie-breaks. After the premature defeat at the Internazionali d'Italia, he won his second title of the season in Lyon by beating Alex Molcan in the third set in the final. The Briton also starts 2023 well, with the victory of the title in Rio de Janeiro against world number two Carlos Alcaraz.

Norrie's strength lies in his shot tolerance and ability to neutralize pace and spin with good field positioning and speed. He lacks the raw power of many contemporary players, but he excels at building points and frustrating opponents with consistent recovery and injections of pace in mid-rallies.
