Player history

Frances Tiafoe was born in Hyattsville on January 20, 1998. In his career he won an ATP title at the 2018 Delray Beach Open. In Grand Slam trials he reached the quarterfinals at the Australian Open in 2019 and above all the semifinals at the US Open in 2022 .

Parents Frances Sr. and Alphina emigrated from Sierra Leone in 1996. At the age of three, Tiafoe learned to play tennis against a wall with his twin brother Franklin, with whom he later trained at the Junior Tennis Champions Center in Maryland, where the father was in charge of maintenance.

Among the tennis players who inspired him are Yannick Noah and Juan Martin del Potro. He visits Sierra Leone for the first time at the age of 8 with his family, a journey that changes his way of thinking. He has been active in charity work and in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

He said, about his childhood dream: "I have always had the dream of becoming a tennis player since I was a child. Becoming a pro… I had the opportunity and I wanted to do it. My mom is still mad that I didn't go to college, but that wasn't in my plan, it was clear to me. As a kid, I used to watch the US Open and imagine what it would be like to play there. I've played with a lot of guys and still see a lot of them, we grew up together.

Like now, I've been training all the time. What I have achieved is pretty crazy. I grew up watching Andre Agassi, Gael Monfils. Roger Federer. Rafael Nadal. Juan Martin Del Potro was the first player I saw play live and at that point he became my hero."

In early 2023, Frances had the honor of participating in the NBA All Star Game. He said about: "It's great. I received the news a while ago, but now it's public. I'll just try to prepare and be ready. It's really an honor. I didn't know anything, then I got an email saying: You will play at the All-Star Game.

It's crazy. Many people have taken an interest in me, many people follow tennis to see me play. This is thanks to the personality I show on the pitch and the fact that I am a black person. I'm reaching many people and I'm happy with that. Do you crush? No, I can't do it. I started relatively from scratch. Growing up, the only thing I really worked on was tennis. But I started playing quite well. I've always had very good elevation. I'm quite curious to see how things go.

I think I'll just try to enjoy myself. I don't want to sound stupid, that's why I've been training for the past two weeks. But it's all about having fun. Of course we talk about the All-Star Game, they will all be there and I will meet so many amazing people and have been fans of forever. I hope it's the first of many appearances. Over the past four or five months, since the US Open, I have met many celebrities and become friends with them. It will be great."

Style of play

Tiafoe's most unusual shot is his forehand, which carries heavy topspin and is driven by an unusual arm swing. When Tiafoe won the 2018 Delray Beach Open, he credited an improved serve for his best game in the tournament.

Tiafoe plays an aggressive offensive game that relies on a big serve and a powerful forehand. Standing 6 feet 2 inches tall, Tiafoe can throw serves at over 140 mph, and regularly hits first serves between 120 and 140 mph. After facing him at the 2016 US Open, John Isner said Tiafoe could return his serve, widely regarded as one of the best in the game, as well as any player on tour outside Novak Djokovic. He also said Tiafoe's second serve could be improved.

Private life

Tiafoe likes to watch and play basketball, and is a big fan of fellow Washington, D.C. area native Kevin Durant. He is also a fan of Washington area sports teams, including the Washington Commanders in the National Football League, and the Washington Capitals in the National Hockey League.

Tiafoe is engaged to Ayan Broomfield. Ayan is a former tennis player, who pushed herself to No. 680 in the WTA rankings in singles and 467 in doubles. In her career she has brought home two ITF titles in the latter specialty, but by now she has stopped playing continuously.
