The Rio Open is a professional tennis tournament played outdoors on clay courts. The tournament has been part of the ATP Tour 500 since 2014 for men, and for women it was part of the International category from 2014 to 2016, when the women's tournaments were last played. The event takes place at the Jockey Club Brasileiro in Rio de Janeiro Brazil.
The Brazilian group that brought the event to Rio de Janeiro bought the rights to play an ATP 500 tournament from Sharks Sports & Entertainment, owner of the U.S. tournaments. National Indoor Tennis Championships in Memphis (ATP 500) and Pacific Coast Championships in San Jose (ATP 250). As a result of this transaction, the Memphis tournament became an ATP 250 in 2014, while the San Jose tournament was discontinued.
