Second seed Danielle Collins to advance to the second round of the Hungarian Grand Prix on Tuesday. The American posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Italian lucky loser Martina di Giuseppe in 68 minutes. Collins converted five break points and was broken just once in the match.
The 48th-ranked Collins will next play Hungarian wildcard Reka-Luka Jani. Jani ousted Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto 6-4, 7-5 in two hours and 22 minutes. Collins’ compatriot, Bernarda Pera also took her place in the second round in the Hungarian capital.
The third seed played Austrian qualifier Julia Grabher in the opening round. Grabher gained the lead in the match after winning the opening set 7-5 but Pera came back strongly in the latter two sets to complete a 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 win in a little over two hours.
While Pera didn’t face a single break point in the second set, she did well to save five of the six break points she faced in the third set. Pera will face Ukraine’s Anna Kalinina for a place in the quarter-finals.
Kalinina defeated Russian Anna Kalinskaya 6-4, 7-6(5) in the first round.
Hungarian Grand Prix: Mixed results for home hopefuls
Hungary’s Dalma Galfi defeated Aliona Bolsova of Spain in their round-of-32 match. Galfi, who received a main draw wildcard, won 7-6(4), 6-3 in an hour and 51 minutes.
She’ll next play Anna Karolina Schmiedlova. Fifth seed Ana Bogdan of Romania also made it through to the round-of-16. Bogdan won against Varvara Lepchenko 6-4, 7-5 in two hours and 32 minutes. She’ll next play Kateryna Kozlova for a spot in the last eight.
Aliaksandra Sasnovich, seeded sixth in the draw, also reached the second round in Budapest. The Belarusian was leading her opponent, Hungary’s Timea Babos 6-0, 2-0 when the latter had to retire in the match with an injury to her left hip.
In the second round, Sasnovich will play another Hungarian, in wildcard Panna Udvardy. Udvardy defeated Mayar Sherif 6-3, 6-1 in the first round. Olga Danilovic completed the second-round line-up at the Hungarian Grand Prix. The Serbian won 6-2, 6-2 against Tamara Korpatsch to set up a clash against Irina Bara for a place in the quarters.
