Daniil Medvedev was born in Moscow to Sergey Medvedev and Olga Medvedeva on 11 February 1996. He has two older sisters,Julia and Elena, respectively 12 and 8 years older. When he was 6 years old, his mother noticed an advertisement for group tennis lessons at the pool where he was taking swimming lessons. His father, an engineer, encouraged him to join. Medvedev's first tennis teacher was Ekaterina Kryuchkova, a former coach of, among others, professional tennis player Vera Zvonareva.

With his family, he moved to Antibes, France, where she trained at the tennis academy. His parents have lived in France ever since, as pensioners.
Medvedev studied physics and mathematics at a specialized school, before graduating early and enrolling in business and economics at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations. Career

Medvedev played his first junior match in July 2009 at the age of 13 at a grade 4 tournament in Estonia. In December 2010, he won his first junior title as a qualifier at just his third tournament. Medvedev made his ATP main draw debut at the 2015 Kremlin Cup. In October 2013 he received a wildcard for the qualifying draw of the ATP 250 tournament in Moscow but was defeated by his compatriot Baluda.

The following week he participates in the Kazan Challenger qualifiers and is eliminated in the second round. After these isolated early career tournaments, he began playing on a permanent basis among professionals in July 2014 at Futures France F15 and returned to conquering an ATP point thanks to the opponent's withdrawal during the first round match. In the first months of 2015 he never gets beyond the second round and in February he fails to qualify for the ATP Open 13 tournament in Marseille. On April 12, he won his second Futures title in singles by beating Tom Jomby in straight sets in the Tunisia F13 final in El Kantaoui. In May he won his only tournament at France F9 in the 7 doubles finals played during the season. He was then eliminated in the second round of singles qualifying at the ATP tournament in Nice and the following week he won the Russia F1 tournament in Moscow. In July he fails to qualify for the ATP tournament in Gstaad.

In September, on the other hand, he passed the qualifications of a Challenger in Shanghai for the first time and reached the semifinals, beating among others the ATP No. 153 Peter Gojowczyk; he retires during the match against Yuki Bhambri, who will win the title. The first significant result of 2016 is the Futures title conquered in February at the Switzerland F2 in Trimbach, beating Adrien Bossel in the final; success allows him to enter the top 300 of the ranking. In March he won the doubles title at Futures France F4 and reached his second Challenger semifinal in Kazan, after having eliminated the ATP nº 85 Ricardas Berankis in the first round, the first top 100 defeated in his career; exits the tournament at the hands of Karatsev, who will win his first Challenger title.

In April he lost in the first qualifying round in Monte Carlo and the following month he made his debut in the singles main draw of an ATP tournament in Nice, after passing the qualifications he was beaten in three sets by Guido Pella. In January 2017, Medvedev reached his first ATP singles final. In the final at the Chennai Open he lost to Roberto Bautista Agut in two sets. He finished the tournament undefeated and became the fourth Open Era tennis player (after Becker, Djokovic and Nalbandian) to have defeated the top three in the world rankings in the same tournament. At the US Open he defeated in order Gasquet, Koepfer, Andujar, Evans, van de Zandshulp, against whom he lost the only set of the whole tournament, and in the semifinal Auger-Aliassime. In the final he finds world No. 1 Novak Dokovic, in full pursuit to complete the Grand Slam after having triumphed in the previous three majors of the season. Medvedev wins his first Grand Slam title by imposing himself 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 and confirms his position as No. 2 in the world rankings.

Medvedev has won 15 ATP titles, including the 202 US Open. He was also a finalist at the 2019 US Open and the 2021 and 2022 Australian Open. He triumphed in the 2020 ATP Finals and with the Russian team he won the 2021 ATP Cup and the 2020-2021 Davis Cup.
