Player history

Daniil Medvedev was born in Moscow to Sergey Medvedev and Olga Medvedeva on 11 February 1996. He has two older sisters,Julia and Elena, respectively 12 and 8 years older. When he was 6 years old, his mother noticed an advertisement for group tennis lessons at the pool where he was taking swimming lessons. His father, an engineer, encouraged him to join. Medvedev's first tennis teacher was Ekaterina Kryuchkova, a former coach of, among others, professional tennis player Vera Zvonareva.

With his family, he moved to Antibes, France, where she trained at the tennis academy. His parents have lived in France ever since, as pensioners.
Medvedev studied physics and mathematics at a specialized school, before graduating early and enrolling in business and economics at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations. He later dropped out to focus on tennis. Later he moved to the Russian State University of Physical Education, Sports, Youth and Tourism, where he obtained a coaching diploma.

Medvedev was listed as ineligible for mandatory military service in the Russian Armed Forces due to his minor health problems due to his 8-month preterm birth. Like many other Russian tennis players, Medvedev considered switching to the flag of Kazakhstan early in his professional career due to lack of support from the Russian Tennis Federation. Sports psychologist Francisca Dauzet is part of his French-speaking entourage.

Career

Medvedev played his first junior match in July 2009 at the age of 13 at a grade 4 tournament in Estonia. In December 2010, he won his first junior title as a qualifier at just his third tournament. As a result, Medvedev jumped 34 positions from 99 to 65 in the ATP rankings, a new career-high. Medvedev started the 2018 season by qualifying for the Sydney International. He reached the final which he won against Australian Alex de Minaur.

The final was the youngest ATP Tour tournament final since 2007, when a 20-year-old Rafael Nadal defeated a 19-year-old Novak Djokovic in the final of Indian Wells. It also was the tournament's youngest final since 1989. At the ATP Finals he secured first place in the group and access to the semifinals with victories in straight sets over Zverev and world number one Dokovic. In February 2022 he became number 1 in the world rankings, the first tennis player to break the dominance of the Big Four.

Style of play

Medvedev is a player who prefers playing from the baseline with long rallies, made with very deep flat shots, with which he occasionally attacks any opponent's short balls. His best shot is the backhand, performed with great depth, speed and precision, with which he often makes precise winning down the line. Despite his height, he has a high speed of movement, especially laterally, and an above average stamina, characteristics that allow him to excel in baseline play. He has an excellent defensive game, facilitated by the height and speed of his movements. These attributes allow him to neutralize aggressive play and powerful shots from opponents by striking effectively from difficult positions. The forehand has a not very composed movement but executes it with power and precision.

An eccentric and very talented player, he is endowed with an extraordinary mental energy with which he is able to turn the tide of a badly started match that other players would resign themselves to losing. In the early years of his career, he often lacked this willpower and he tended to accept defeats without reacting. He is also known for his fiery temper, with tantrums that lead him to destroy his racket, invite spectators to boo him or push his coach to leave the stands. He addressed these issues together with the psychoanalyst and performance coach he started working with in 2018, who helped him control the impatience to get results and to achieve the goals with determination.

He has excellent service, with prime flats that can exceed 220km/h. As a second he prefers to use the slice, in order to generate precise and difficult to attack trajectories, but sometimes he is also capable of serving powerful second shots over 200 km / h. His serve can currently be defined as one of the most effective on the circuit, perhaps second only to that of specialists of the caliber of Alexander Zverev or Matteo Berrettini. He is known for his extremely deep serve return. He achieved the best results on hard courts, a surface on which he fully expresses the characteristics of his game. He is less effective on grass and clay, where he hasn't achieved particularly significant results.
