Rothesay Classic: Barbora Krejcikova reaches pre-quarters on a day marred with upsets

Top seed Barbora Krejcikova moved into the round-of-16 of the Rothesay Classic on Wednesday. The Czech beat Spanish qualifier Cristina Bucsa 6-3, 6-3 in an hour and 21 minutes. Krejcikova won 77% of her first-serve points to Bucsa’s 59%.
Although Krejcikova could win only 41% of her second-serve points, she won 71% points on return on her opponent’s second serve. Krejcikova saved two of the four break points she faced while converting five of eight break points that came her way.
The world no. 12 will play fellow Czech, qualifier Tereza Martincova in the second round. Martincova came through against Bulgarian lucky loser Viktoriya Tomova, 6-1, 6-3 in an hour and 20 minutes. Another lucky loser, Rebecca Marino, meanwhile, fared better in her first-round match against a qualifier.
The Canadian defeated Chinese qualifier Xinyu Wang 7-6(5), 5-7, 6-3 in two hours and 39 minutes to reach the round-of-16. Marino will play Emina Bektas next.
Rothesay Open: Seeds tumble out
The American qualifier got past seventh seed Shuai Zhang in their opening-round match, 6-4, 6-3 in 68 minutes.
Bektas hit 12 aces and won 75% of her first-serve points to Zhang’s 65%. She also won 58% of her second-serve points and 53% points on return on her 34-year-old opponent’s second serve. Following this loss, Zhang’s now lost 10 matches on the go.
The Rothesay Classic’s also the ninth consecutive tournament where the world no. 37’s crashed out in the first round. The last time Zhang won a match was in January, at the Lyon Open. That time, Zhang defeated Madison Brengle in the first round to enter the second round which she eventually lost to Maryna Zanevska.
A couple more seeds also fell at the WTA 250 event on Wednesday. Linda Fruhvirtova ousted sixth seed Bernarda Pera 6-1, 7-6(3) in an hour and 20 minutes. Fruhvirtova will play a derby next, either against Krejcikova or Martincova.
Harriet Dart, meanwhile, took out fifth seed Anhelina Kalinina 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 in an hour and 44 minutes. Lastly, Lin Zhu wrapped up a 6-3, 6-0 victory over third seed Magda Linette to reach the quarter-finals of the Rothesay Classic.
