Taylor Fritz provides explanation for retiring versus Daniel Evans in Washington

Taylor Fritz admitted he felt "embarassed" after not finishing his Washington last-16 match but noted the playing conditions were extremely tough and suggested he felt he was in danger of collapsing. The playing conditions were absolutely brutal in Washington as the temperatures were going as high as 36C.

Fritz, the top-ranked American tennis player, took on Daniel Evans in the Washington last-16. Evans had a 3-6 7-6 (6) 4-1 lead, before Fritz retired. After the match, Fritz revealed that his foot has been nursing a foot issue since Wimbledon.

However, Fritz is expecting to be ready for next week's Montreal Masters.

Fritz on retiring versus Evans

"First off, health wise, I'm okay. I feel embarassed not being able to finish a match. I've never pulled out of a match in my life but after my episode in Toronto last year where I pushed myself to finish the match and almost passed out, I assured my team I would pull out if similar symptoms happened again.

Typically, I pride myself on my fitness and ability to compete in very h*t/humid, brutal conditions like today. Many don't know this but I have been in a boot since Wimbledon. I started practice on court again this Saturday so playing here in DC was definitely ambitious but I'm really happy with my actual level of tennis and I'm really happy that my foot is feeling good.

Now that my foot feels better can finally put in the on court work and be prepared for the rest of the year. Sorry if worried anyone," Fritz said in a message posted on his social media.

Now, Fritz turns his focus onto the Montreal Masters.

Fritz is aiming to have a big summer as he would certainly like to cap off his Grand Slam year with his first Grand Slam title at the US Open.
