Player history

Taylor Fritz was born in San Diego on 28 October 28 1997. In singles he has won four ATP titles out of nine finals played and his best ATP ranking was 7th, which he reached in February 2023. In doubles he has played in two ATP finals and has not he went beyond the 104th place in July 2021. He was one of the most promising tennis players of his generation already among the juniors, having finished 2015 in first place in the world ranking in his category after winning the junior singles at the US Open and reaching final in junior singles at Roland Garros.

His Father, Guy Fritz is a tennis coach and his mother Kathy May is a former tennis player who reached the top 10 of the rankings. He learned to play tennis at the age of two from his parents and his idols were Juan Martin del Potro and Pete Sampras. Growing up he practiced many sports before dedicating himself exclusively to tennis, after a visit to the USTA training center in Boca Raton in Florida where he noticed how Reilly Opelka and Tommy Paul among others his peers were much more prepared, especially on clay where he almost had playing experience, inspiring him to improve his tennis.

In a recent interview Fritz said: "Turning pro at 17 is one of the worst fears of every top junior. You see you did so well at junior level and then you wonder what happens if you don't make it into the greats. I felt like a real switch when I turned pro and realized it was all real. Everything was great before, but now it's like this. To be the best in the world you have to really believe it, you will never achieve all the goals if you don't totally want it."

Fritz said at the end of 2022: "I am very happy every time I win a tournament and I can hold the trophy and lift it, with all the confetti and fireworks, the photos that are taken.cIt's one of the reasons you want to play tennis, which is why I like it. I hope to come back to Saudi Arabia as it went very well and I enjoyed it. We'll have to wait and see what happens next year. I am very happy when I get this kind of victories because I played the big points very well.cI want to thank all the sponsors who made this event possible. It's a really great event. The field speaks for itself, there are all the best players in the world who come here. I felt the support from the fans all week, I felt the love."

Fritz had not mincemeat to express his disappointment at the disinterest shown by US fans towards the most famous team competition, the Davis Cup. At the end of the match against Italy in 2022, Fritz reiterated his thoughts on the Davis Cup in the press conference.

He told: "Davis Cup? It's not a very important competition for the Americans. If we were to win it, maybe, people would care. I think nobody really cares what we do here. In case we win the title, I doubt ESPN would cover it. This doesn't affect us, we have the ambition to win this competition every year, regardless of media relevance. In the US nobody cares about Davis, especially the press. P

laying conditions in Malaga? To tell you the truth I thought of the balls which were awful; playing winners was a feat. So my only thought at that moment was to try to make the most of my serve and bring the match back to a draw. On Lorenzo Musetti's set points I served well and saved myself; then in the second I managed to break and everything was easier from there. I have to say the atmosphere is incredible; today the host team wasn't playing, and it was a working day at 10 in the morning. and however the stadium was full, the atmosphere was incredible. I must say that from this point of view the organization must be applauded."

Career

Fritz made his debut on the major circuit at the 2015 Nottingham tournament by overcoming the first round against Pablo Carreño Busta, before being defeated in straight sets by Feliciano López. In October of the same year he won two consecutive Challenger tournaments, in Sacramento and Fairfield, becoming the first player in the world to accomplish this feat before turning 18 years of age. The exploit allows him to close the 2015 season in 174th place in the ATP rankings.

In 2014, eight Futures played, two quarter-finals. In 2015, Taylor combined junior events with professional tournaments and he reached two Futures semi-finals before the US Open (he won the junior singles title there). Then, he claimed back-to-back Challenger titles in Sacramento and Fairfield, losing two sets in 10 matches, finishing the season in the Top 200 after another final in Champaign

In 2016, Taylor opened the season with a Challenger title at Happy Valley, playing his first Grand Slam tournament at the Australian Open. In Memphis, Fritz advanced into the final, losing to Kei Nishikori for his biggest result on the Tour (the youngest ATP finals since Nishikori at Delray Beach back in 2008), and he entered the Top 100 after reaching the quarter-final at ATP 500 event in Acapulco as a qualifier. He won his first Masters 1000 match in Miami and pushed Roger Federer to the limits on the grass in Stuttgart. Finished the season with 15 ATP wins overall, including a quarter-final in Atlanta and one win in Shanghai Masters for the place in the Top 80 at the end of the season

In 2017, Fritz failed to repeat the last season, winning 13 ATP matches and finishing outside the Top 100. He lost in the final of Dallas Challenger to Ryan Harrison before reaching the third round at Indian Wells, his best result on the Tour until Los Cabos where he played in the quarter-final. Taylor played in the last eight in Winston-Salem and Chengdu as well, closing the season with seven Challenger wins in Ho Chi Minh City, Knoxville and Champaig.

The 2018 season saw him reach the semifinals in the Houston and Chengdu tournaments, where he was defeated by Steve Johnson and Fabio Fognini respectively. In the world rankings he closed the year at position No. 49. On 29 June 2019, on the grass of Eastbourne he won his first ATP title, thanks to the successes obtained against Paul Jubb, Guido Pella, the only one able to snatch a set from him, Hubert Hurkacz, Kyle Edmund and in the final Sam Querrey, whom he defeated with a score of 6-3, 6-4. The 250 points conquered make him climb to 31st place in the world rankings.

On August 5, he climbed to step No. 25 of the ATP ranking. He then went out in the first round at the US Open, beaten in four sets by Feliciano López. He then returned to victory after five consecutive defeats in Shanghai, where he beat Fernando Verdasco in the first round in three sets, only to surrender to Khachanov in two games. In Basel, he beat a top ten for the third time this season, overcoming world number six Alexander Zverev in the first round, only to be beaten in the following round by Alex De Minaur.

In 2020, he then took part in the Acapulco tournament, where he reached his first final in an ATP 500, eliminating John Millman, Ugo Humbert, Kyle Edmund and John Isner in sequence. In the last act he was defeated by world number two Rafael Nadal with a score of 6-3, 6-2. Thanks to this result he rises to position number 24 in the standings.

In 2021 he won two third rounds in the Grand Slam tournaments at the Australian Open and Wimbledon. Three weeks before his debut match at Wimbledon, he underwent knee surgery. He conquers the only final of the season in the ATP 250 in St. Petersburg where he is defeated in three sets by Marin Cilic. Thanks to the semifinal in the Indian Wells Master 1000, he ends the year with the new best ranking as number 23 in the world.

In 2022, Fritz reaches the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time at the Australian Open and at the end of the tournament brings the best ranking to 20th position. In March he won the first Masters 1000 in his career at the Indian Wells tournament, after the success in the semifinals over world No. 7 Andrej Rublev, he beat former number one Rafael Nadal 6-3 7-6 in the final, interrupting the series of 20 consecutive victories from the Mallorcan and bringing the tournament back to the United States 21 years after Andre Agassi's victory. He also brings the best ranking to the 13th position in the world. Of significance in the following period were the first quarter-finals played in a Masters 1000 on clay in Monte Carlo.

In June he won the ATP 250 on the grass of Eastbourne beating Maxime Cressy in the final. He also pushes himself to the quarterfinals for the first time in a Grand Slam match at Wimbledon, where he yields to Nadal in the tie break of the decisive set, and two weeks later he rises to 12th place in the world. He returns to beat Rublëv at the Cincinnati Open and goes out in the quarterfinals at the hands of Daniil Medvedev. After the surprising elimination in the first round at the US Open, he redeems himself in October by winning the ATP 500 in Tokyo with success in the final over Frances Tiafoe after two tie-breaks, and with this result he enters the top 10 for the first time, all 8th position.

In September 2022, Fritz was with Team World at the Laver Cup, the last tournament played by Roger Federer. On that occasion, his teammate, Frances Tiafoe, got a lot of flak for defeating Roger in his last match. Fritz defended his countryman, saying:

"I was quite shocked to see how much hate Frances and Jack received for winning the match and Frances for hitting Roger or hitting Rafa's ball into the net. That wasn't a performance. We were playing for a lot and for a lot of money. She really annoyed me because I know Roger would absolutely hate it if they gave it to him. The Top 10? It is definitely one of those goals that you have for life. It's not the ultimate goal in any way and I don't want to make people think why I'm celebrating it, but it's a huge achievement and no one will ever take that away from me."

At the beginning of 2023, he won the United Cup with US team against Italy in the final. At the Australian Open 2023, Fritz was defeated in the second round by Alexei Popyri, and he got the 7th place of the ATP ranking.

Fritz wants to be ready for the Sunshine Double 2023, which will take place in March, between Florida and California. The pressure due to the points to be defended in the Indian Wells 1000 tournament does not scare him:

He told: "I took a few weeks off and then I trained, although not as much as I would have liked, as I have had to live with an injury in recent weeks. It's a small hip problem that has been bothering me since the start of the United Cup. So the preparation hasn't been ideal, but I've had the time and the possibility to relax for almost two weeks. It's what I needed and now I feel ready to compete.

I don't particularly feel the pressure, every year in the race we all start from scratch. So I don't feel any particular pressure to win Indian Wells again. It's definitely a tournament where I always play well and that means a lot to me, but today I'm already in the top ten of the competition, so I'm in line with the goals we have set ourselves for this season."

Style of play

Fritz is an offensive baseline player. Fritz's groundstrokes are powerful and penetrating and can force mistakes from his opponents or final points as winners. His most powerful and consistent stroke is his forehand, although he also possesses a strong backhand groundstroke, which is a flatter, lower bounce.

Fritz possesses a dominant serve that can reach 149 mph and solid groundstrokes on both wings. One of Fritz's signature strengths is his ability to hit sharp angled cross shots on both his backhand and forehand. He also has a good topspin lob.

The former tennis player and former coach of André Agassi, Brad Gilbert spoke through his social channels and commented on the rise of Fritz this season. The American tennis player started as number 23 in the world and finished 2022 inside the Top-10. Gilbert tweeted: "Taylor has had an amazing year, I have to say he's improved a lot."

Among other strong seasonal results Fritz reached the quarterfinals of the Wimbledon tournament and was a major obstacle for some of the top tennis players on the circuit. After the victory, Fritz made some statements in Arabia: "Every time I go to an event, be it an ATP tournament or an exhibition, my only goal is to win. I will do everything to be able to bring home the result I have achieved."

Private life

In 2016, not yet nineteen, he married the tennis player Raquel Pedraza, with whom he had his son Jordan the following year. He then divorced the girl. In 2020, he became romantically linked to the influencer Morgan Riddle.

Morgan Riddle is an influencer model and has over 50,000 followers on Instagram and is also very well known on Tik Tok. Morgan lives in Los Angeles, but spends a lot of time traveling around the world, also following the career of her boyfriend who often takes her to different corners of the globe with the various tournaments in which the tennis player participates.

Morgan Riddle details her and her boyfriend's life on Tik Tok in great detail. His goal is to show how a professional tennis player lives and make this sport cool in America after the glories of the 80s and 90s. In fact, in the United States tennis is not as much followed as it deserves according to Fritz's girlfriend, but Morgan has all the intention of showing her beauty to her compatriots, on the other hand her boyfriend is the number one tennis player in America and is therefore a point of reference.

However, Morgan Riddle's social activity also caused some difficulties for Taylor Fritz. The tiktoker has in fact been accused by many insiders of presenting a lying side of tennis, or in any case not complete. Morgan shows a glossy world, made up of events and travels around the world, overshadowing the great sacrifices that mark the career of a professional tennis player.

Taylor Fritz has always publicly supported his girlfriend's business, admitting that what is seen in the videos is pure reality. The tennis player also added that he doesn't understand how anyone can get angry about those videos when he has been asked about the matter. The most glamorous couple in tennis are therefore more united than ever and Morgan Riddle continues to enthusiastically bring the general public into the world of tennis.
