World No. 11 Jannik Sinner revealed he was hampered severely by blisters and that's why he was forced to retire his Miami Masuers quarterfinal after just few games. On Wednesday, world No. 103 Francisco Cerundolo was 4-1 up when Sinner decided to end the match.
Sinner put the pressure on Cerundolo early on but the Argentine saved a break point in the opening game. After saving a break point, Cerundolo claimed the first break of the match in the fourth game and served out the following game to open a 4-1 lead.
That was when Sinner put an end to the match. Sinner revealed he started feeling blisters toward the end of his round-of-16 match against Nick Kyrgios. "I had blisters and I couldn't move. I started feeling them yesterday, in the last game against Nick.
Today I wanted to go out there and try, but it didn't work," Sinner said after the match, per We Are Tennis.
Sinner's Sunshine Double ended on an unfortunate way
In Indian Wells, SInner made the round-of-16 before he gave Kyrgios a walkover because of an illness.
Sinner then made a deep run in Miami before he was struck by blisters. "It's tough. I mean, I played 2 tournaments, Indian Wells and Miami, both retired. It's tough because I was playing good. Yesterday also against Nick I was playing a very good match.
It's tough to accept," Sinner added. Sinner's retirement propeled Cerundolo into his first Masters semifinal. "I've been training with Sinner for the past few days and I hadn't seen anything strange. It's not the best way, but it means everything to me being in the semifinals.
It's a turning point for my life, it changes my perspective," Cerundolo said after the match. Sinner will now turn his focus to getting ready for the Monte Carlo Masters.
