Palermo Open: Seeds Danielle Collins, Shuai Zhang score dominant wins in 1R

All but two seeds reached the second round of the Palermo Open on Tuesday. Top seed Danielle Collins, too, was among those who made it through. The American needed an hour and 30 minutes to get past Germany’s Katharina Gerlach 7-5, 6-3.

Collins converted five of the 10 break points she had on Gerlach’s serve while saving three of the five break points, she faced. For a spot in the last eight, she’ll take on Maddison Inglis, who’d previously reached the second round on Monday.

Fourth seed Shuai Zhang of China also reached the second round with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Spain’s Cristina Bucsa. Zhang, who took a wildcard to play in the Italian city, wrapped up the win after an hour and 24 minutes of play.

She’ll take on American Francesca di Lorenzi next. Di Lorenzi won her first-round match against Russia’s Valeria Savinykh 7-5, 6-3 in two hours and three minutes. Australian Astra Sharma, seeded seventh in the draw, moved into the pre-quarter-finals as well.

Sharma claimed a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 win over Italian wildcard, Lucrezia Stefanini in two hours and four minutes. Sharma broke Stefanini five times in the match while saving four of the nine break points, she faced. She’ll next play Natalia Vikhlyantseva.

Palermo Open: Olga Danilovic and Lucia Bronzetti oust seeds

Olga Danilovic upset the eight-seeded Kamilla Rakhimova of Russia in the first round. The Serbian won 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 in two hours and six minutes. In the second round, she’ll take on Katarina Zavatska.

The Ukrainian won her opener 6-2, 6-3 against Australian Lizette Cabrera in an hour and 19 minutes. Italian Lucia Bronzetti scored the other upset of the day. The wildcard ousted fifth seed Viktoria Tomova of Bulgaria 6-4, 6-1 in an hour and 43 minutes.

Bronzetti won all five break points, she had while saving three of five break points, she faced. For a place in the quarter-finals, Bronzetti will now play Grace Min. Romanian Elena-Gabriela Ruse also took her place in the second round of the Palermo Open. Ruse defeated Mandy Minella 6-3, 6-1 in an hour and 19
