Hamburg European Open: Bernarda Pera goes two for two in titles in consecutive weeks

Bernarda Pera wrapped up her week at the Hamburg European Open with an upset over the top-seeded Anett Kontaveit in their final that was played on Saturday. The American won 6-2, 6-4 in an hour and 14 minutes against the Estonian, ranked no.

2 in the world. Pera dictated the momentum of the match and was leading 6-2, 5-2. The only time Pera’s game suffered a blip was when she served for the match in the eighth game. However, she steadied herself and in the 10th game, served out the match to secure the win for herself.

Throughout the first set, Pera didn’t face any break point and converted two of the three break points that came her way on Kontaveit’s serve. In the second set, too, she secured two of the three break points that came her way on her opponent’s serve.

Pera finished the match winning 71% of her first-serve points and 60% of her second-serve points. Meanwhile, Kontaveit won 60% of her first-serve points and 47% of her second-serve points. The southpaw ended the match with 14 more points than Kontaveit’s 45.

Pera reached her first WTA final the previous week at the Hungarian Grand Prix after having come through the qualifying draw. She went on to win the title in Budapest after defeating Aleksandra Krunic in the final, without conceding a set all the way through.

This week, too, Pera replicated her feat at the Hamburg European Open as she didn’t cede a set in the five matches that she played. All said, between the two events, Bernarda Pera now has a victory run of 12 matches. Following these heroics, Pera’s expected to attain a new career-high of no.
