Ons Jabeur was just too good against Diana Shnaider in the final of the Ningbo Open, winning it 6-2, 6-1 after an hour and 18 minutes. The match saw the Tunisian come out and play freely even as Shnaider looked to be caught up in the moment of making it this far in a WTA event for the very first time.
Jabeur lost only five points on her first serve, winning 21 of 26 first-serve points she put in. She also won 54% points on return on Shnaider’s first serve. On her second serve, Jabeur won 62% points and on second-serve return, the tournament top seed won 55% points.
Ningbo Open: Ons Jabeur's wait for hard-court trophy triumph ends
Jabeur created 10 break points on her 19-year-old rival’s serve. Of these, she converted five. On her own serve, she thwarted the trio of break points that greeted her.
Jabeur finished the match by winning 63 points, 25 more than what her opponent managed. The Ningbo Open’s the first time on the circuit that Ons Jabeur’s won an event that’s played on hard courts. Prior to this, she’d conceded all three finales contested on the surface, including at the US Open last year (l.
to Iga Swiatek). For this year, this is the second event Jabeur’s won, after the Charleston Open in April (d. Belinda Bencic). She’d also lost the Wimbledon final to Marketa Vondrousova, her second such loss in that stage of the Major, for the second straight year.
