45 Viktorija Golubic 7-5 4-6 7-5 to progress into the US Open second round. Andreescu, who claimed her maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open in 2019, was unable to defend her title at Flushing Meadows last year. "I feel super confident after this match," Andreescu told Mark Roe after her opening round win at the US Open, as revealed by Mark Masters.
"I was, obviously, very nervous coming back here [after] not playing in 2020 & there were some downs throughout the match, but I just fought my butt off. I'm just super ecstatic."
Andreescu was analyizing too much over the past few months
"Over the past couple of months I really had to figure out like what works best for me and what doesn't, and I've been feeling like I've been too caught up in my head with different things and I told myself let's just keep it simple.
Crosscourt, serve to body, T, and just push her back and when I have the opportunity, come to the net. That's really what it was because I didn't want to make it difficult for myself, just because lack of matches, confidence and whatnot," Andreescu revealed, per Chris Oddo.
Andreescu was down 5-3 in the first set but then she claimed back-to-back breaks to steal the opener from Golubic. However, Golubic kept her focus after losing the second set as she broke Andreescu in the ninth game of the second set and served out for a decider in the following game.
Like in the first set, Andreescu found herself down by a break in the third set but she responded with two breaks to overturn the deficit and escape with a three-set win.
