US Open: Bianca Andreescu bests Viktorija Golubic in late-night marathon

Sixth seed and 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu outplayed the valiant Viktorija Golubic in their first-round match on Tuesday. The Canadian wrapped up a 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 win, coming from a break down in the deciding set, in two hours and 48 minutes.

Andreescu was able to eke out a lead in the match after taking a tight opening set. The Swiss went on to retaliate by taking the second set and push the match into the decider. In the third set, despite serving first, it was Andreescu whose serve came under pressure in its first three games.

The world no. 7 saved multiple break points in the first two games but was unable to save yet another in the third game. A quick consolidation for Golubic helped her go up 4-2 in the set. However, from the seventh game onward, Andreescu scripted a comeback.

First, she held her serve to keep the deficit reduced to just one break and then in the eighth game, broke back Golubic to level the set at four-all. Four games later, trying to serve in the match, Golubic’s serve came under pressure again and she conceded the match on the first match point on an unforced error.

Andreescu hit 40 winners to Golubic’s 15. She also had nine more unforced errors than her opponent’s 27.

In the second round, Barty will play Clara Tauson. The Dane defeated France’s Clara Burel 7-5, 6-0 in the opening round. Tuesday also had a couple of upsets at the US Open. Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo upset the 22nd-seeded Karolina Muchova 6-2, 7-6(3).
