Viktorija Golubic reacts to stunning Maria Sakkari in Indian Wells

Swiss tennis player Viktorija Golubic acknowledged that you have got to have the power in order to compete against the best players on the Tour. Golubic, ranked at No. 46 in the world, stunned world No. 9 Maria Sakkari 5-7 6-3 6-2 to reach the Indian Wells Masters third round.

Sakkari is enjoying the best season of her career and she was aiming to make a deep run in Indian Wells. However, Golubic had other plans as she stunned Sakkari to clinch the biggest victory of her year. “I always loved to really play the game, to have so many options.

This is something I have always enjoyed. But I think at this level you have to be physically very, very strong and also you have to have power. It’s not enough to mix the game,” said Golubic after the match."

“In the last years, I could develop more power, more strength, being faster as well.

This is something you need to compete and this is where the variation comes in. But if you don’t have that part, it’s not enough,” added Golubic. Sakkari, who made semifinals this year at the French Open and US Open, is expected to make her debut at the WTA Finals this year.

Before the start of Indian Wells, Sakkari acknowledged that she was heavily motivated to make a good result. "It would sound crazy and stupid if I said that I'm not motivated because I'm trying to achieve one of the biggest goals of my career, for the first time, which is the WTA Finals, and I'm more motivated than I was in the first week of the year, because, yes, it is the end of the season and I know that other players are tired, and I know that other players don't have that goal,” Sakkari said during her pre-tournament press conference.
