Monterrey Open: Leylah Fernandez fends off Qinwen Zheng threat to reach last-eight

Leylah Fernandez, the defending titlist at the Monterrey Open this week, got through to the quarter-finals but not without problems in her second-round clash. The Canadian needed three sets and two hours and 42 minutes to defeat Qinwen Zheng, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6(3).

Of the two players, it was the Chinese won more points off her first serves – 76% to Fernandez’s 70%. But where the lefthander won 59% of her second-serve points, Zheng could only manage to win 49%. Fernandez went five on six on break points saved while Zheng saved 10 of the 12 break points she faced.

Fernandez now awaits either Egypt’s Mayar Sherif or another Chinese player in Qiang Wang.

Meanwhile, Zheng’s compatriot, Xinyu Wang crashed out in the second round.

Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia claimed a 6-2, 6-2 win over Wang in an hour and 14 minutes. Haddad Maia won 82% of her first-serve points to Wang’s near-55%. The 69th ranked Haddad Maia saved all three break points she faced while converting four of the eight break points she had on Wang’s serve.

Either Marie Bouzkova or Petra Martic will be Haddad Maia’s opponent in the quarters. Fifth seed Camila Osorio also reached the quarters in Monterrey. The Colombian defeated Mexican Marcela Zacharias, 7-6(2), 6-3 in an hour and 39 minutes in their round-of-16 clash.

Osorio broke Zacharias’ serve five times while saving two of the five break points she faced. This is the 20-year-old’s second straight quarter-final in as many weeks. Previously, she reached the quarters of the Guadalajara Open last week.

For a spot in the semi-finals, Osorio will take on either top seed Elina Svitolina or Viktoriya Tomova. Lastly, fourth seed Sara Sorribes Tormo also reached the quarter-finals of the Monterrey Open with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Harmony Tan of France.

Sorribes Tormo needed an hour and 17 minutes to clinch victory for herself. Sorribes Tormo could play either Heather Watson or fellow Spaniard, Nuria Parrizas Diaz for a berth in the semis.
