Anhelina Kalinina, the second seed at the Transylvania Open advanced to the second round on Tuesday. The Ukrainian who took on Eugenie Bouchard moved into the following round after the latter, who received a main draw wildcard, retired in the match with an injury.
Kalinina was leading 6-3 at the time of Bouchard’s retirement. Kalinina will now play Ysaline Bonaventure for a chance to reach the quarter-finals. Fourth seed Anastasia Potapova also took her place in the second round with a 6-2, 7-6(5) win over Ann Li.
Potapova needed an hour and 29 minutes to post the win. In the second round, Potapova will play Viktorija Golubic. The Swiss defeated France’s Diane Parry in their opener, 7-5, 7-6(6) in two hours and 20 minutes. Parry’s fellow Frenchwoman, Oceane Dodin – a lucky loser into the main draw – also crashed out in the first round.
Briton Harriet Dart posted a 6-2, 6-0 win over Dodin in just 64 minutes. Dart saved all five break points she faced while converting five of eight break points on Dodin’s serve. Dart will play Anna Bondar next.
Transylvania Open: Elena-Gabriela Ruse holds strong
Three Romanians played their first-round match on Tuesday of which, two crashed out.
Seventh seed Xiyu Wang ousted Jaqueline Cristian 6-3, 6-3 in 80 minutes in their match. Likewise, Spain’s Nuria Parrizas Diaz defeated wildcard entrant, Irina Bara, 6-1, 7-5. Wang will play another Romanian, Elena-Gabriela Ruse in the second round.
Ruse, who also received a main draw wildcard, defeated French lucky loser, Harmony Tan in their opening-round clash. Ruse came from a set down to prevail 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-3 in two hours and 23 minutes. Incidentally, Ruse’s also the only home player left in the draw of the Romanian event.
Meanwhile, Parrizas Diaz will take on Dalma Galfi in the second round. The Hungarian who played her first-round match on Wednesday came through in an upset over ninth seed, Lucia Bronzetti, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. On Wednesday, Xinyu Wang posted another upset against the fifth-seeded Magda Linette, 6-2, 6-4 to reach the second round.
Wang will take on Anna Blinkova. Lastly, Kamilla Rakhimova also took her place in the second round of the Transylvania Open with a 6-2, 6-4 round-of-32 win over Olga Danilovic. Rakhimova will play Jule Niemeier next. Photo Credit: Transylvania Open Twitter
