Merida Open: Alycia Parks, no. 1 seed Magda Linette strive hard to enter pre-quarters

Alycia Parks reached the second round of the Merida Open in Mexico on Wednesday. The fifth seed needed two hours and 35 minutes to get past local wildcard, Fernanda Contreras Gomez, 7-6(7), 3-6, 7-5. Parks hit 13 aces but also had seven double faults.

Her opponent finished the match with five aces and two double faults. Parks won 74% of her first-serve points to her opponent’s 78% and 60% of her second-serve points to the latter’s 61%. The match featured just two breaks of serve, one each on each player’s serve.

Looking to make it to the quarter-finals, the Lyon Open winner will now play Sweden’s Rebecca Peterson. The qualifier defeated Argentine Nadia Podoroska 6-3, 7-5.

Merida Open: Camila Giorgi makes a case for herself

Top seed Magda Linette came from down a set and also needed to save a break point to reach the second round in her match against Colombia’s Camila Osorio.

Linette won 6-7(2), 7-5, 6-2 after two hours and 41 minutes. In the second set Osorio had a match point with the Pole serving at 3-5. However, the latter saved it and then won the next four games in a row to win the set and push the match into the decider.

In the second round, the 2023 Australian Open semi-finalist will play Panna Udvardy. The Hungarian won against Jule Niemeier 7-6(1), 7-6(5). On Monday, Camila Giorgi upset sixth seed Mayar Sherif in their first-round match.

The Italian won 6-4, 6-2 in an hour and 16 minutes. Giorgi won 86% of her first-serve points to the Egyptian’s 56% and 62% of her second-serve points to her opponent’s 47%. Giorgi converted four break points on Sherif’s serve and saved two of the three break points she faced.
