About Barbie
Development on a film based on the Barbie line began as early as September 2009, when Mattel signed a deal to develop the project with Universal Pictures, with Laurence Mark producing, but nothing went through.
In April 2014, Mattel then teamed up with Sony Pictures: the project was for Jenny Bicks to write the script and Laurie MacDonald and Walter F. Parkes as producers, with shooting set for later this year. In March 2015 Diablo Cody was brought in to rewrite the script, while Amy Pascal had joined the production team.
Also in 2015, Sony had Lindsey Beer, Bert V. Royal and Hillary Winston rewrite the script. In December 2016 Amy Schumer had entered talks for the lead role, with Hillary Winston's script rewritten by Schumer and her sister Kim Caramele.
In March 2017 Amy Schumer left the production due to scheduling conflicts. In July 2017, Anne Hathaway also became interested in the lead role, and Sony around the same time hired Olivia Milch to rewrite the script and Alethea Jones to direct.
In October 2018, Sony's film rights to the project expired and passed to Warner Bros., with a consequent change of cast: Margot Robbie was in contention for the lead, while Patty Jenkins in the running for directing. Margot Robbie was confirmed in July 2019, while Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach had just been cast as writers.
Greta Gerwig is also tapped to direct the film in July 2021. In October 2021, Ryan Gosling also entered final negotiations to play Barbie's celebrated male correspondent, Ken. In the first half of 2022 the cast was confirmed to be complete. The film was released in US cinemas on July 21 of the same year.
