ATX Open: Danielle Collins carves easy route into last-8; Anastasia Potapova ousted

Fourth seed Danielle Collins claimed a place in the quarter-finals of the ATX Open on Thursday. The American needed just 66 minutes to wrap up a 6-1, 6-1 win over fellow countrywoman, Cathy McNally in their second-round match.
McNally put 72% of her first serves in to Collins’ 59%. But where Collins won 76% of her first-serve points, McNally could only win 48% off her first serves. Collins also won 75% of points on return on McNally’s second serve while winning 50% of her second-serve points.
Collins saved all three break points she faced while converting five of eight break points on McNally’s serve. Anna Kalinskaya will be Collins’ next opponent. In her round-of-16 match, Kalinskaya defeated Coco Vandeweghe 6-3, 6-1 in 56 minutes.
Kalinskaya won 90% of her first-serve points, saved the lone break point she faced and converted four of five break points on the American’s serve.
ATX Open: Peyton Stearns' going strong
Marta Kostyuk also reached the quarters.
The eighth seed from Ukraine defeated another local player, Madison Brengle in their second-round match. In the deciding set, Kostyuk didn’t face any break point and converted three break points on Brengle’s serve.
Looking to reach the semi-finals, Kostyuk will play Anna-Lena Friedsam. The German took out Erika Andreeva 7-5, 6-7(2), 7-6(8) in their second-round meeting. Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Katie Volynets upset third seed Anastasia Potapova in their second-round match.
The American came from 0-5 down in the final set to clinch a 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 win after two hours and 17 minutes. Volynets will meet fellow American Peyton Stearns next. Stearns, a main draw wildcard in Austin this week, won against Mirjam Bjorklund 6-3, 7-5.
The last quarter-final at the ATX Open will be played between Varvara Gracheva and Sloane Stephens. Gracheva beat Anna Blinkova 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-1 in their second-round match. Stephens, the fifth seed won 6-4, 6-4 against Heather Watson.
