After winning six matches in Toronto, Halep played a three-setter in her Cincinnati opener. Playing a big number of matches over the last week has taken a toll on Halep and she has decided to pull out out from the rest of Cincinnati.
Still, Halep has had a great preparation for the US Open. Halep now has 10 days to rest and she won't be lacking any confidence going into the US Open.
Halep and coach Patrick Mouratoglou won their first title together
After reaching three semifinals during this past grass season, Halep finally went a step further and made it all the way in Toronto.
It was her first title since hiring Mouratoglou in April. "First, I would like to warmly thank the incredible Romanian crowd in Toronto who have been so important in the support of Simona through this victorious past week," Mouratoglou wrote on Instagram.
"I have never witnessed a nation that stands behind their champion this hard, from all over the world. Second, I want to thank the members of our Team who help Simona everyday perform @arnaudrestifo @candice_go. Third, I want to congratulate Simona.
You have been an incredible competitor all week and shown once again why you have such a relentless career. Once again, it is an honor for me to be by your side. This is our first title together and a big one. With 18 out of the Top 20 in the draw, it means a lot, and makes us hungry for more. Monday you will be back in the Top 10 in the world. A milestone. Cheers @simonahalep."
