Mutua Madrid Open: Iga Swiatek rolls into maiden SF in the Spanish capital

Iga Swiatek was ruthless on yet another day to notch yet another win. The world no. 1 needed only 69 minutes to wrap up a 6-0, 6-3 win over Petra Martic in the quarter-finals of the Mutua Madrid Open on Wednesday. Swiatek won 77% of her first-serve points to the Croatian’s 63%.

She also won 59% of her second-serve points while winning a whopping 92% points on return on the 27th seed’s second serve. Swiatek faced only one break point that she saved successfully. She also converted all four break points she faced on Martic’s serve.

For the match, Swiatek had three more winners than Martic’s eight and nine fewer unforced errors than the latter’s 17. Post-match, Swiatek said, “I feel like I'm playing better and better every day. This is pretty great, because I didn't know if that was going to be possible at the beginning of the tournament.

But I was patient and I was hoping to get that feeling, and today was for sure a good day”.

Mutua Madrid Open: Will Veronika Kudermetova win her 1st match against Iga Swiatek?

Looking to reach the semi-final, Swiatek will play 12th seed Veronika Kudermetova.

Kudermetova upset third seed and 2022 Madrid finalist, Jessica Pegula in their quarter-final clash. The 26-year-old took over two hours to wrap up a 6-4, 0-6, 6-4 victory over the American. Kudermetova was able to win only 27% of her second-serve points but despite this, was able to outplay Pegula when it mattered the most.

Kudermetova converted six of nine break points that came her way while saving five break points. Likewise, Kudermetova finished the match by winning eight fewer points than Pegula’s 83. The Mutua Madrid Open’s the first WTA 1000 tournament where Veronika Kudermetova’s made it to the semi-final.

For Iga Swiatek, too, it’s a semi-final debut in the tournament. Going into their match-up, the Pole will carry a 3-0 lead in their previous matches. The most recent match the two played was at the 2023 Doha Open semi-final. Swiatek went on to successfully defend her title in that event. Photo Credit: Mutua Madrid Open
