Top seeds Ons Jabeur and Petra Kvitova made it to the quarter-finals of the Ningbo Open on Wednesday. The second seeded Kvitova received a walkover into the quarters after her opponent from her opponent, Yulia Putintseva. Jabeur, meanwhile, defeated Tamara Korpatsch in the last match of the day, 6-3, 6-2.

The Tunisian needed an hour and 24 minutes to complete the match. The world no. 7 faced only two break points in the match and both of these came in the second set, in the seventh game. Serving for a 5-2 lead, Jabeur was pushed to the brink in that game by the German before eventually retaining her serve.

In the following game, serving to stay in the match, Korpatsch faced two match points and while she saved the first, she wasn’t able to save the second, resulting in Jabeur going through to the next round. The 29-year-old won 71% of her first-serve points to Korpatsch’s 61%.

She also won 56% of her second-serve points and 70% points on return on the latter’s second serve. Jabeur finished the match with 19 more points than her opponent’s 49. Looking to move into the semi-finals next, Jabeur will play Vera Zvonareva.

Ningbo Open: Clara Tauson's misery extends

Zvonareva advanced to the quarters after her opponent Clara Tauson retired mid-match in their second-round clash. Zvonareva was leading the Dane 6-4, 1-0 before the latter stopped the match.

This is the second week in a row Tauson retired from a match. Last week, at the Guangzhou Open, she retired in her second-round match against Putintseva. Czechs Katerina Siniakova and Linda Fruhvirtova produced upsets in their respective second-round match-ups at the Ningbo Open.

Siniakova ousted third seed Sorana Cirstea in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5 in an hour and 50 minutes. Her teenaged compatriot needed three sets to get the better of Anna Blinkova 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 after two hours and 13 minutes of play.
