Israel Tennis Association (ITA) Chairman Avi Peretz has ripped Ons Jabeur over the Tunisian's message about the Israel-Palestine conflict, accusing the three-time Grand Slam finalist of "supporting a murderous terrorist organization." In a message posted on her Instagram Story, Jabeur expressed her support for Palestine.
However, Jabeur also highlighted that she does not support violence and underlined that she does not believe that peace can be achieved through violence of any kind. Addressing Jabeur's remarks, ITA Chairman Peretz revealed that the association filed a formal complaint to the WTA through the ITF, calling on the governing body of tennis to sanction the Tunisian. “This tennis player incites and supports a murderous terrorist organization.
We’re glad she’s in the minority compared to the sane athletes in the rest of the world. We strengthen the security and rescue forces (Isreli army), trust them to do the job and pray they return safely.’ Because the player belongs to the WTA, they are the body responsible for handling the case.
The association and the ITF are now waiting to see what measures they will take against her," ITA Chairman Peretz said in a statement that was posted on the federation's Facebook page.
ITA Chairman Peretz strongly responds to Jabeur's comments on the Israel-Palestine conflict
After the long-standing feud between Israel and Palestine got a new unfortunate chapter, Jabeur took to her social media to share her thoughts on the situation.
"What Palestinians have been going through during the last 75 years is indescribable. What innocent civilians are going through is indescribable; no matter what their religion is, or what their origin is. Violence will never bring peace; I cannot stand with violence but I also cannot stand with people having their lands taken.
So understanding context is important, looking at what's happening today and deciding to ignore recent history is irresponsible and won't bring peace. And peace is all we care about. Peace is what everyone needs and deserves.
Stop the violence and #FreePalestine," Jabeur wrote in a message posted on her Instagram Story. Meanwhile, the WTA also issued a statement on the Israel-Palestine conflict. In their message, the WTA expressed their support for Israeli athletes and also said they were mourning "the loss of innocent lives in Israel." When it comes to Jabeur's message, the WTA hasn't made any comments on it.
