In the last major event of the WTA season - the 2023 edition of the WTA Finals, played in the Mexican city of Cancun - Ons Jabeur will begin the journey against the Polish world no.2 Iga Swiatek and will be the protagonist of her Group B together with Swiatek, Coco Gauff and Marketa Vondrousova.
Jabeur qualified for the WTA Finals thanks to a first part of the season that saw her protagonist with the final at Wimbledon (eliminating the defending champion Elena Rybakina and the world number 1 Aryna Sabalenka before being defeated by the champion Marketa Vondrousova, ed.) and the title in the WTA 500 in Charleston on green clay.
In the pre-tournament conference, Jabeur underlined the happiness of being at the Finals again.
Ons Jabeur's heartbreaking confession: "It was difficult"
"Yeah, I mean, I'm happy to be here in Cancun for the second time. Obviously it wasn't an easy season for me.
I didn't even expect to be here. But yeah, I'm super proud of myself. Hopefully I can finish the season very well. I haven't seen the trophy. I mean, the group is tough. Obviously any group could be very difficult. But yes, it's a big challenge.
I love challenges. It will be great for me to see my level. But , I mean, the good thing is that I try to play freely and without pressure. Yes, I can really see the trophy in my house well! I know the place. I'm imagining where I can put it.
I mean, obviously as a player, I was hoping that the stadium was ready a couple of days earlier so we could do better preparation and everything. I know the organizers have worked very hard. I want to thank them for that. I'm not very happy that this is the first day we come across the stadium.
This It's a really big event. We should have been able to be ready earlier and train on the court," explained the Tunisian tennis player at the press conference on the eve of the Cancun event.
