Ons Jabeur says her goal is to help tennis grow as a sport and that's one of the main reasons why she accepted to join Novak Djokovic's PTPA and support their idea. Earlier this year, Djokovic's PTPA - which was created in 2020 - announced its Player Executive Committee.
The committee featured some well-known names, including three-time Grand Slam finalist Jabeur. Jabeur, who comes from Tunisia and knows very well how difficult it was to make it in tennis from a small country that doesn't really have a rich tennis history, hopes tennis will one day become more accessible to kids all over the world.
Also, Jabeur admits she is a big admirer of Djokovic fighting to ensure better conditions for every player, not just the top ones.
Jabeur on joining Djokovic's PTPA
“I’m someone that really wants to help other players because I feel the love for this sport, it deserves much better.
This sport should give the opportunity to everyone that wants to start playing the game. When Novak and Vasek talked to me and explained to me what PTPA does, I was kind of new, I was just getting into the meetings, learning new stuff, and I feel like I learned so many things about tennis that I didn’t even know before.
Which is something I think really helped me and my confidence as well, because I feel more confident speaking about a lot of things. Also seeing Novak all the time and seeing his knowledge about so many things outside tennis, that really also helped me a lot.
I think we’re in the process of changing a little bit the sport in a better way and that’s the goal; to really protect the players 100 percent and protect everyone, not just No 1 or No 2, to hopefully help as many players as we can," Jabeur told The National.
When Djokovic launched the PTPA in 2020, he said one of his biggest goals was to help ensure better rights and conditions for every ATP and WTA player. At the time, Djokovic specifically mentioned that he wanted to help the lower-ranked players because he felt they were especially vulnerable.
