Fifth-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut was thrilled with the performance he delivered versus Daniil Medvedev in Mallorca as he thought he played a "really complete match." On Thursday, Bautista Agut saw off first-seeded Medvedev 6-3 6-2 to progress into the Mallorca semifinal.
Last week, Medvedev claimed a straight-set win over Bautista Agut in Halle. “I had to play very good to beat Daniil. He’s the No. 1, the last champion here in Mallorca. He just beat me a few days ago. I played a really compete match,” Bautista Agut said in his on-court interview, per the ATP website.
“I was more convinced with my game today, hitting strong, very solid. I think I did a really good match”.
Bautista Agut: I was more confident
After delivering a poor performance versus Medvedev in Halle, Bautista Agut was determined to play much better this week.
“You need to be very confident that you can make it. Last week I was a bit far,” Bautista Agut said. “Today, I was with a lot of confidence. I knew that if I would play a good match, I would get my chances, and I got it”.
Bautista Agut made a strong start to the match, having taken an early 3-0 lead. Bautista Agut missed out on two consecutive break points in the fourth game but also saved a break point in the fifth game to open a 4-1 lead.
No break points were seen in the rest of the first set as Bautista Agut realized his second set point in the ninth game. After winning the first set, Bautista Agut earned the first break of the second set in the third game to take a 2-1 lead.
Bautista Agut continued to put pressure on Medvedev as he earned his second break of the second set in the seventh game to open a comfortable 5-2 lead. In the eighth game, Bautista Agut realized his first match point to complete a straight-set win. Bautista Agut plays next Antoine Bellier, who defeated Tallon Griekspoor.
