ATP Sydney suffers another blow, Taylor Fritz and Cristian Garin pull out

World No. 23 Taylor Fritz and 17th-ranked Cristian Garin have both withdrawn from Sydney. Both Fritz and Garin had been expected to make a debut in Sydney next week. Garin tried to make the Sydney main draw in 2019 but back then he failed to make it past the qualifying event.

The Sydney event has now suffered more blows as previously Roberto Bautista Agut and fan favorite Alex de Minaur pulled out of the event. Following the withdrawal of Fritz and Garin, a place opened for Benjamin Bonzi and Tallon Griekspoor.

Fritz, Garin played at the ATP Cup

Fritz and Garin both kicked off their season at the ATP Cup but neither the United States or Chile passed the group stage. In his last group stage match, Fritz beat Cameron Norrie 7-6 (4) 3-6 6-2.

"Cam and I have played so many times, it's actually pretty ridiculous. Every single time it's just an absolute battle," Fritz said. "I know that he can go into these modes where he will just not miss a ball and he kind of did that in the second and I was getting pretty frustrated with the shots he was coming up with.

"I had to just let it go in the third set, reset and try to serve a little better so he didn't get so many chances to hit those unreal shots and I upped my level a lot in the third and played really well." American ATP Cup team captain Michael Russel praised Fritz for being verry communicative and anayltical.

“Taylor is very communicative, very analytical, which is a good thing and then sometimes it could be a little different, because he is so communicative,” Russell said. “He says whatever is on his mind, whatever he’s thinking and he always questions everything that I suggest, which can be good because if he doesn’t agree with it, or if it’s something that he wants to detail further, then we have an open discussion about it. “But I appreciate that. I’d rather have more communication than less communication."
