ATP Miami: Holger Rune makes winning start

World no. 8 Holger Rune lost a thriller to Stan Wawrinka in Indian Wells. The young Dane hopes for a better run in Miami, and he is through to the third round with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Marton Fucsovics. Holger sealed the deal in an hour and 21 minutes, dropping only 12 points behind the initial shot and defending the only break point to keep the pressure on the other side.

Marton struggled on the second serve and got broken three times to propel the rival through and end his campaign in the second round. Rune fired 19 winners and 17 unforced errors and left the opponent on seven direct points.

The Dane played well at the net and overpowered the Hungarian in the more advanced rallies to make a winning start. Holger denied a break point in the encounter's second game with a service winner and avoided an early setback.

Marton moved 40-15 up on serve in game three but failed to bring it home.

Holger Rune defeated Marton Fucsovics in straight sets in Miami.

Rune seized the second break chance to forge the lead and gain momentum. World no. 8 held at love with a service winner to cement the advantage before Marton responded with a fine hold in game five for 2-3.

The young gun closed the sixth game at love, and the Hungarian followed that pace a few minutes later to remain within one break deficit. Holger grabbed the eighth game at 30 to open a 5-3 gap and force the opponent to serve to stay in the set.

Marton hit a double fault in game nine to lose serve for the second time and hand the opener to Holger after 35 minutes. The second set saw a much tighter battle, with both players serving well in the opening 11 games. Rune grabbed the first game at 15, and Fucsovics came to 1-1 with a service winner in game two.

An ace pushed the young gun 2-1 in front, and Marton responded with a powerful serve in the next one. There was nothing to separate them in the following games, with the servers controlling the pace and keeping the returners away from deuces or break opportunities.

Fucsovics served to stay in the match at 4-5 and delivered another comfortable hold for 5-5. Holger clinched the 11th game at 15 and forced Marton to serve to stay in the match for the second time. The Dane created a match point in game 12 and converted it after the Hungarian's volley error at the net.
