Former Tokyo champion David Goffin is through to the quarter-final following a 7-6, 7-6 victory over Denis Shapovalov in an hour and 56 minutes. There were no breaks of serve after they fended off all six break chances, staying neck and neck all the time and with the Belgian who had the upper hand in the pivotal moments to seal the deal in straight sets.
The Canadian sprayed almost 40 errors while the Belgian tamed his shots more efficiently, especially when it mattered the most. Shapovalov faced the ultimate challenge already in game two, facing three break chances and fending them off with winners to avoid an early setback and settle into a great rhythm after that, forcing David to repeat that if he wanted to stay in touch until the tie break.
Goffin sailed through his service games as well and had the upper hand in the breaker, moving 6-1 up after a forehand winner before Denis grabbed four straight points to reduce the deficit and prolong the set. Still, David sealed it with a service winner in the 12th point, closing the opener and gaining momentum ahead of set number two.
There, they wasted break chances in games three and four, serving well in the rest of the set to set up another tie break where David scored four mini-breaks and moved over the top when Denis missed a volley in the ninth point to push the Belgian through.
World no. 143 Hyeon Chung is through to the first ATP 500 quarter-final since Acapulco 2018, ousting Marin Cilic 6-4 3-6, 6-1 in just over two hours. It was their first match since Brisbane 2016 and the first victory for Hyeon overall, dropping only 16 points in 13 service games and dominating in sets he won to move over the top and advance into the last eight.
The Korean tamed his shots nicely, hitting 19 winners and 16 unforced errors while Marin counted to 31 winners and 45 mistakes, unable to overpower Hyeon from the baseline and suffering the 15th loss of the season. Chung lost only two points on serve in the opening set and broke Cilic in the third game after a backhand error from the Croat, closing the set with a hold at love in game ten for a 6-4.
Marin responded with a break at love in the fourth game of the second set thanks to a forehand winner, clinching the set with an ace at 5-3 to set up a decider and extend his chances. Chung recovered in the final set, earning a break in game two following a forehand error from Cilic and extending the advantage to a 5-1 with another break in game six.
Serving for the win, Hyeon sealed the deal with an ace in game seven, celebrating one of the best victories since returning from an injury. John Millman barely survived the first qualifying round and he is now in the quarter-final, defeating Lloyd Harris 6-3, 6-2 in 69 minutes.
John lost serve once and grabbed almost half of the return points to advance into the first quarter-final for the first quarter-final since Winston-Salem. Taro Daniel has joined Yasutaka Uchiyama in the quarters, beating Jordan Thompson 6-4, 7-6 in an hour and 38 minutes.
The Japanese lost ten points in 11 service games, never facing a break point and earning one break in the opening set that sent him in front, taking the second set tie break to reach the third quarter-final of the season and the first above the ATP 250 level.
