Three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray was frustrated after suffering a surprise defeat at the Australian Open. Murray, a former world No. 1, missed out on a great chance to make the Australian Open third round as Japanese Taro Daniel claimed a surprise win over the Briton to progress into the third round.
After taking out seeded Nikoloz Basilashvili in the first round, Murray gave himself a good chance to make the third round. After losing to Daniel, Murray was visibly frustrated and disappointed. "When you know you've not got many years left it is frustrating," Murray told BBC Sport.
"After a good win in the first round I created an opportunity for myself. It was probably a match I should win and I didn't take that chance. "I was not able to sustain a good enough level for long enough, whereas he was solid throughout.
"I'm obviously very disappointed with that."
Murray could retire after 2022
Murray has had two major hip surgeries since 2017 and he is past his prime. Murray had a strong preseason because he wanted to put himself in the best position to succeed in 2022.
Murray was asked if he would return to the Australian Open in 2023. "This is a really important year for me for a number of reasons, and I want to perform well in the big events. For me, tonight is not good enough in that respect," Murray said, per Tennis Majors.
"Making second round of slams is not something I find particularly motivating. I want to be doing better than that. "Yeah, depends on how I get on this year results-wise and how I perform in the big events." Murray suffered a shock defeat to Facundo Bagnis in his first match of the season at the Melbourne Summer Set. Last week in Sydney, Murray made his first ATP final since 2019 before ending runner-up to Aslan Karatsev.
